New words that learners may be unfamiliar with are in the New word boxes in the margin of the Learner’s Book. For example, the word ‘chronological’ comes from the Greek word chronos, which means time; when we place events chronologically, we arrange them on a time line. When the class reads through the text, point out the new words in the context where they are used. Encourage learners to use the new words in their own sentences.


Pacing


This unit should take about three hours to complete. There are three activities in the unit, which will take up at least half the time.


Activity 2 Record your memories Teaching guidelines


Learners should draw six blocks that are connected with arrows, from one to the next. In the first block, they should draw something that happened to them when they were very young, and that they themselves remember happening. In the next block, they should draw something that happened when they were a bit older, and so on. In the sixth block they should draw something that happened only a short while ago and that they remember well – perhaps from this year or the year before. It is important that they remember these events themselves – they should be firsthand accounts and not stories that someone else told them.


Suggested answers The answers will differ from one learner to the next.


Extension activity


Encourage learners to write a paragraph on each event. They should try to record the dates and location of each event. In this way, they can then create a book about their own life.
