Teaching ideas and tips


Tell learners that Mandela was the first South African president chosen by all the people of our country. Outline the main events of his life, starting with his childhood. Explain why he joined the ANC and why he helped form a freedom army. Tell learners about Mandela’s arrest in 1960 and about his life in prison on Robben Island, and also about the important work he continued to do even when he was in prison. Explain how things started to change in 1990, when President FW De Klerk said that the government would free Mandela, and when work was started on the Constitution, which includes the Bill of Rights. Do Activity 2 and then start discussing the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi.
