Unit introduction
• We can learn about the present by looking at pictures. For example, clothing tells us something about people and their lives in the present. The background in a picture can often also tell us more about the people in the picture and their lives.
• We can get information from stories and interviews, by talking to people and listening carefully to what they can tell us.
• We can also learn about the present by reading newspapers. Local newspapers tell us about the things that happen close to our homes.
• We can get information from objects. Objects can be the things that people use or keep, but they can also be buildings. Some buildings have special meaning, and are called monuments.
Teaching ideas and tips
Encourage learners to look at pictures from magazines or newspapers, and to think about the pictures. What can they tell about the people and the places from the pictures? What are the people doing? Where was the photograph taken? What are the people wearing? What is happening in the background? How can learners describe the place: for example, dry, lush, exciting, dull, wealthy, poor, peaceful? Describe the way we use newspapers to get information and show learners how what might affect them directly is reported in a local news article. Discuss the type of information that we can get from stories and interviews.
Encourage learners to think about the people who know a lot about the area. Lastly, describe the objects that we use nowadays that people in the future might remember. Explain the importance of certain buildings and statues that we can visit.
Resources
Photographs, pictures from magazines or newspapers, articles from local newspapers, an antique or old object and posters of monuments.
