Vocabulary

New words that learners may be unfamiliar with are in the New word boxes in the margin of the Learner’s Book. For example, ‘interviewing’ means to meet with someone to ask him or her questions. Draw learners’ attention to these throughout the unit. When the class reads through the text, point out the new words in the context where they are used. Encourage learners to use the new words in their own sentences.

Pacing

This unit should take about two hours to complete. There is one activity in the unit, which will take up at least half an hour. This activity is an enjoyable way of showing learners how objects tell us about the people who use them, so the point should be made easily, and the time will be well spent.

Activity 1 Learn about your friends Teaching guidelines

Remind learners that the objects should not show their name, and they should not put a photograph of themselves in the box. The objects that they choose should represent the things that they love, or the things that are important to them. For example, if a learner loves his dog, he can place the dog’s collar in the box. Other learners might then guess that the box belongs to that learner.

Suggested answers

This is a fun activity that aims to show learners how we can find out about people by thinking more deeply about the things that are important to them. Answers will differ according to learners.

Extension activity

Encourage learners to listen to the stories that their grandparents tell about the family, and about the area in which they live. Explain to learners that these stories are valuable because they give us information about our families that we can get nowhere else, and one day we can pass these stories on to our grandchildren.
