vaporized. Each pass of the laser removes a frac- tion of the insulation, and typically four or five passes are required to fully remove it. The laser ablates the insulation right down to the conductor, leaving a perfectly clean surface for connection. Enamel-coated wire is used in many applica-

tions. Large gauge wire is used in motors and transformers, while smaller gauges are used in chokes and precision windings, such as those found in precision medical power tools. Enamel coatings are also common around the medical wiring used in catheters. To aid connections with these types of fine wires — less than 30 AWG — they are often ribbonized in bi-filar, tri-filar, or quad arrangements. Bi-filars are often used as thermocouples in catheters to meas- ure the temperature of the adjacent tissue when procedures such as RF ablation are carried out. For rib- bonized enamel-coated wire, it can be

Universal Launches Uflex and Flexbond Platforms

Conklin, NY — Universal Instru - ments has added two systems to its portfolio: the Uflex™ modular auto - mation platform, and the Flexbond™ hot bar bonding platform. The Uflex system facilitates

user-level programming by leverag- ing a cloud-based library of pre- defined process strategies. It has been built on a high-performance base platform with 2G acceleration,

desirable to remove a window of insulation from just one of the filars of the ribbon.

High-Performance Data Cables High-performance data cables (HPC) are used

in many applications, but are most often found in data centers where they are used to connect large numbers of computers together. InfiniBand is a computer network communi-

cations link used in high-performance computing that has a high throughput. It is used for data interconnect both among and within computers. Today it is the most commonly used interconnect in supercomputers. The high-performance cable gives rise to a number of challenges, especially for termination.

For instance, the highest-performing cables cannot be bent, which makes using mechanical tools impossible. HPC cables are becoming increasingly common in automotive applications. Despite their reasonably simple construction, they can lead to manufacturing problems where requirements for the highest yields meet high-volume manufactur- ing requirements. For HPC cables, the company's Mercury range of strippers provide an excellent solution. For the majority of cable designs a single system can be used to strip the jacket, foil shield and inner dielectrics. Contact: Laser Wire Solutions, 9305 Ludgate

50µm accuracy and 8µm repeatabili- ty. The versatile platform accommo- dates large boards up to 630 x 500mm (24.8 x 19.7in), components up to 38 x 127 x 50mm (1.5 x 5 x 2in), and can be used for a variety of process, including pick and place, dispensing, screw driving, labeling, and test handling. The platform can be incorporated into lean assembly lines to perform complex processes or configured in-line to replace manual processes. Flexbond incorporates up to 18

bond heads that are selectively active based on RFID-designated place- ments. The system is a fully-automat- ed machine capable of direct die attach on flexible circuits. It combines with the company’s Fuzion systems for full- process integration, including flux transfer, high-accuracy placement and hot bar soldering. Flexbond also uses pulse heat technology, closed-loop temperature control and programma- ble pressure settings. Contact: Universal Instruments,
