additional year, experimental results had the same tendency as the result mentioned previously.

Conclusion In this study, comparative experiments between evaporative and steam humidifiers were conducted. In addition, several measures for pollution control of evaporative humidifiers were evaluated.

The conclusions are summarised as follows. • No considerable difference in cleanliness was observed between evaporative and steam humidifiers.

• The impact of the difference in measures for the pollution control of evaporative humidifiers is low. However, dry washing seems to have the most potential restraint against microorganisms.

• A certain amount of airborne microorganisms were observed in the humidified air for both evaporative and

Legionella sp.

steam humidifiers. Therefore, as shown in various guidelines, an apposite filter is necessary for the outlets to keep the air cleanliness at an appropriate level.

Other factors, such as energy efficiency, economic efficiency, and ease of maintenance might also be considerations for determining the type of humidifier used, in addition to air cleanliness, should also be considered when specifying humidifiers for air conditioning systems in hospitals.
