Horus celebrates centenary shipping JDN Enregistrements in Switzerland has purchased its third and fourth Horus networked audio converters from Merging Technologies – bringing the total number of Horus devices sold to 100 since shipping commenced in April. Based in Gland-Vich, JDN works all over Europe, making portability and versatility among its chief priorities. In addition, noted Founder Jean-Daniel Noir: “We quickly found that the mic preamps were of a very high standard and because we have so many more channels in Horus, we save a lot of connections and cables. Using excellent microphones, we found that Horus accepts a huge dynamic. We have recorded many projects, which have varied greatly both musically and in location, and Horus has proven to be very versatile. Having AES/EBU, MADI, Ravenna and analogue all-in-one is a huge bonus.” 8.E96

Panasonic By David Fox

The new AJ-HPX600 is Panasonic’s first upgradeable camera, built to answer customer complaints that every year their cameras were superseded by new technology. The new camera is “backwards and forwards compatible”, said Nigel Wilkes, UK group manager for Broadcast. It comes with AVC-Intra 100 (as well as DV and DVCPRO formats), but users will be able to add 50Mbps Long GoP recording and AVC-Ultra at 200Mbps as they become

available. The camera has a single 2/3-inch CMOS sensor “with very good low light sensitivity”,

TriCaster 8000 live By Carolyn Giardina

TriCaster 8000, the new top-of- the-line integrated production system in NewTek’s TriCaster line, is making its European début at IBC. Tricaster 8000 is a full eight M/E system with up to eight cameras, IsoCorder Technology, 14 configurable outputs, switcher operation snapshot macro setup, assignment and single button triggering, four downstream

keyers, and control surface among its features. NewTek has designed TriCaster 8000 to replace the process of posting video to the web with in- show publishing of up to eight subsections of a show, such as interviews, still images and alternate camera angles. This aims to transform a technical director into a media publisher who can feed the show or any subsection of it to a selection of different destinations. NewTek sums up: “With TriCaster 8000, NewTek is

a gigabit Ethernet network connection and will be able to do variable frame rates (1-60fps at 720p and 1-30fps at 1080). The mid-range camera will cost about £14,000 and ship after IBC. “It’s the lightest shoulder- mount camcorder on the market, weighing in at 2.8kg,” Wilkes added. Users will also be able to add Wi-Fi to allow mobiles and laptops to view clips, whether live or a previous clip while the cameraman is recording another.

Panasonic is bringing out a new micro P2 card (using the SD card form factor) that will be able to record 200Mbps. It will fit into a P2 card adapter and ship in February. 9.C45/9.D35/9.D40

The AES X192 initiative to develop a high performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability standard – in which ALC NetworX is an active participant on behalf of its Ravenna partners – is continuing apace. 8F57

Kayak shoots for the Rapids

Digital Rapids By Carolyn Giardina

The developer says that it is seeing accelerating industry support for its new Digital Rapids Kayak workflow platform, with the addition of over 20 new companies to the Kayak ecosystem since the platform’s debut earlier this year.

The new alliances range

from technology and solutions providers to systems integration specialists. A number of these partners are

showcasing or announcing Kayak-based components and solutions at this IBC, including Digimetrics, whose Eos Audio Normalizer corrects audio to ATSC A/85, EBU R128 and ARIB TR-B32 specifications for regulatory compliance in a single pass. Interra Systems’ Baton enterprise-class quality control software, elsewhere, verifies file-based content passing through various steps of Kayak workflows for conformance to format standards, regulatory compliance and a wide variety of video and audio quality checks.

These launches join Kayak components demonstrated earlier this year, including audio and video encoding and management systems from Dolby Laboratories, DTS and Rovi’s MainConcept. “We’re thrilled with the

response from our solution partners and their excitement about leveraging Kayak to integrate technologies into leading-edge workflows and to extend their market reach,” said Onkar Parmar, senior partnership manager for Kayak at Digital Rapids. 7.F33
