As operators struggle to deliver a growing amount of Over The Top video content, interoperability promises to optimise this process argues Jacques Le Mancq, president & CEO, Broadpeak
As over the top (OTT) video consumption continues to increase at a rapid pace, today’s payTV operators are challenged more than ever to deliver a high quality of service while minimising operational costs. Given the proliferation of OTT video services available on the internet, operators today need to differentiate themselves by delivering an OTT service that offers premium content, or run the risk of subscribers turning to internet players for alternatives. Broadpeak understands the challenges that operators face in delivering more content to more viewing devices across a variety of networks. And, believes the most successful OTT content delivery method is one that is based on best-of- breed technologies rather than an end-to-end solution. In order to truly differentiate themselves from the competition, operators can no longer rely on generic low-risk, low-impact end-to-end
solutions. Employing a best-of- breed approach allows operators to have the flexibility they need to select the best technology available for each component of the delivery chain — from the headend equipment to the home network systems. Telcos and cable companies that have adopted the best-of- breed approach, have the ability to upgrade as needed without being stuck in a closed and proprietary end-to-end system. In addition to flexibility, the best- of-breed approach also ensures faster adaptability with technology advancements, enabling operators to support all current and future adaptive bit rate standards. This approach is the only one that uses groundbreaking technologies to help operators

partners is critical. Further, third- party integration is also essential to success. For this reason, at IBC2012,
effectively manage the growing amount of content from a severely restricted infrastructure. Since operators are not confined to a single technology- solutions provider, they have the power to deploy innovative new solutions in order to deliver a more competitive and a more differentiated service offering. While best-of-breed is in the best interest of operators, it is not without its own set of challenges. Operators can find it
difficult to rapidly roll out an OTT service due to its complex ecosystem. A wide range of video equipment including encoders, digital rights management, middleware, conditional access, home gateway, and network systems must communicate optimally to ensure smooth operations. In order to truly benefit from the combined best-of-breed solution, complete integration between the various technology
Broadpeak is launching an innovative union called the Broadpeak Open Alliance (BOA). It will consist in a technical alliance dedicated to promoting interoperability between disparate home network components, such as home gateways and middleware. Integration between other technologies in the OTT ecosystem, such as video headend equipment or service platforms, will follow soon. We have created the Broadpeak Open Alliance because we want to speed up OTT projects, and to achieve that vision, interoperability within the industry is needed. IBC2012 is the perfect stage for technology vendors to meet and form the strategic partnerships that are crucial to ensuring a best-of-breed approach for operators. 4B72
