iTunes ready

Fraunhofer IIS By David Davies

Version 2 of the Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Plug-in for digital audio workstations features tools designed to allow mastering engineers to mix their music for the Mastered for iTunes programme.

For the first time, the plug-in enables mastering engineers to use the iTunes Plus codec for realtime auditioning of their mix. The result, say Sonnox and Fraunhofer, is a powerful and time-saving tool to mix directly for Mastered for iTunes, including clipping detection and the possibility for realtime corrections while mixing. To facilitate this new functionality, Sonnox has added the Apple versions of the AAC and HE-AAC codecs to the plug-in so that the exact clipping behaviour of the iTunes encoding chain may be monitored. Sonnox and Fraunhofer have also integrated the latest surround audio codecs in the form of MPEG Surround, AAC multichannel and HE-AAC multichannel. These codecs are widely used for surround broadcasting and streaming. In addition, the Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec continues to incorporate Fraunhofer implementations of all major MPEG audio codecs, including mp3, AAC and HE-AAC, as well as lossless codecs such as mp3HD and HD-AAC. 8.B80

also to ensure compliance with government regulations on loudness such as the US CALM Act, the UK Ofcom regulations or the French CSA regulations. Alarm signals will alert the operator when pre-set loudness thresholds are exceeded and

these signals can be delivered by simple GPOs and/or SNMP traps, which carry actual loudness values. Loudness measurements can be performed over a long run or over a fraction of a programme, or both. These measurements can

be triggered by automation systems via GPIs or via the network or even manually, by buttons of the X*AP remote panel. M*AP also offers functionality for acoustical QA. It has eight speaker outputs that allow for A/B checking of stereo compatibility of a surround downmix through alternative speakers, as well as via L/R front speakers. 10.D20
