project, Orad worked right alongside the ESPN production team to better understand their goals for live game analysis. In doing so, Orad developed groundbreaking technology that not only introduced a new

Apps drive upturn in listener interaction

Broadcast Electronics By David Davies

Social media and mobile tools specialist Commotion, which is part of the Broadcast Electronics group, is showcasing a new website widget and updated mobile apps. Texas-based radio station KFWR, The Ranch is among the broadcast outlets to have increased listener interaction

through Commotion- originated solutions. In 2010 Commotion provided the station with a one-to-one method by which its listeners could send SMS text messages and Facebook/ Twitter posts to the station via an admin control panel. The Ranch received just over 100,000 text messages from its listeners in 2010.

During the following year Commotion brought its new iPhone and Android app and

website widget to the station, allowing listeners not only to communicate via text, but also take part in a realtime conversation between the station and other listeners (even those using different devices or social networks). The ensuing drop in SMS text messages to KFWR was replaced by communication from the Commotion apps and website widget, which generated over 230,000 unique messages from their

listeners. As a comparison, even though KFWR has close to 50,000 listeners following its Facebook posts, KFWR only generated 24,000 messages directly from Facebook in 2011. This year, Commotion launched the next version of the iPhone and Android app, along with a new mobile website and a new website widget. These new tools allow listeners to not only share messages, but also share voice messages, photos, links and instagram photos. The upgrade has also allowed an

and much more engaging way to deliver sports commentary, but also a new business model in which broadcasters can better monetise content,” said Avi Sharir, president and CEO of Orad.

The Orad MVP sports enhancement system and additional Orad technology that was part of the workflow are all on display at IBC. These include PlayMaker, an SD/HDslow- motion video server, Trackvision, a tracking engine, and HDVG, a graphics rendering engine. 7.B27

has received more than 300,000 unique messages from listeners via its Commotion apps, website and mobile page. In June 2012, listeners viewed and opened The Ranch’s Commotion website widget, mobile page and apps more than 225,000 times. As a point of comparison, KFWR only received 302 messages from listeners directly through its Facebook page. 8.C91
