Fundamental Consultancy Skills

Certificate in Management Consulting Essentials core programme

For those considering a move into management consultancy from a functional discipline or those wishing to obtain an introduction to the skills and knowledge needed in the field of management consultancy. Themes include the consultancy role; the consultancy cycle; the client consultant relationship; effective communication; effective project delivery; and structured knowledge, research and analysis. This programme provides an opportunity to try out a variety of fundamental techniques as part of a consultancy team. Those wishing to obtain the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Certificate in Management Consulting Essentials will be required to maintain a personal development portfolio. Additionally, the learning outcomes from the programme will be tested via your submission of a written assignment, which is assessed externally by the CMI.

For those pursuing qualifications in management consultancy, we offer the Certificate in Management Consultancy Essentials and the Diploma in Management Consultancy. The qualifications consist of two stand alone open programmes seen on this page (Fundamental Consultancy Skills and Developing Consultancy Skills). There is also a distance learning option for the Diploma. The National School is an approved centre for the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualifications and these have been developed in partnership between the CMI and the Institute for Business Consulting (IBC). See page 77 for more information about these qualifications.

Developing Consultancy Skills

Diploma in Management Consultancy core programme

For those who wish to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to operate as the leader of a management consultancy intervention and work closely with clients on organisational change. You’ll develop your interpersonal skills, with themes covered including personal style; how change impacts on individuals and groups; engaging, influencing and persuading clients; communicating with impact; as well as the ‘harder’ skills of effective planning and management of a consultancy project at this level. If you wish to obtain the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Diploma in Management Consultancy, you’ll be required to maintain a personal portfolio demonstrating personal learning and growth. In addition, the learning outcomes from this programme will be fully tested by the submission of two written assignments and a short presentation and interview about a work-based project.

Diploma in Management Consultancy – Distance Learning Option

For those who wish to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to operate as the leader of a management consultancy intervention and work closely with clients on organisational change. You’ll cover the same syllabus as those attending the Developing Consultancy Skills (DCS) programme (see above) but through a distance learning option. The programme comprises four modules and you will work through the material following a structured approach over a 12 week period of study. Your progress will be monitored throughout the programme and if you wish to obtain the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Diploma in Management Consultancy, you’ll be required to maintain a personal portfolio demonstrating personal learning and growth. In addition, the learning outcomes from this programme will be fully tested by the submission of two written assignments and a short presentation and interview about a work-based project.

Practical Benchmarking

For those leading, supporting or contributing to benchmarking projects who need to understand and use appropriate tools and techniques. This programme covers benchmarking, its types, uses and role in improving business performance; planning a study and getting started; collecting data; and implementing improvement and project review.

Measuring Organisational Performance – Introduction

For consultants and those required to advise managers and clients on reviewing or developing organisational performance measurement systems. This programme offers a balance between theory and practise. Themes covered include the need for performance measurement; key models and techniques and how to use them effectively; setting the strategic agenda; developing objectives, performance indicators and targets; and some of the commonly encountered implementation issues and challenges.

Soft Systems Methodology

For consultants and others involved in strategic and organisational reviews and the improvement of business systems and processes. This programme looks at the use of Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as a development tool to aid in the understanding of often complex problems and the development of options for improvement. You will learn how to apply the seven-stage methodology, define core functions and related activities, identify the root cause of problems and re-engineer processes selectively.
