BUSINESS STUDIES

As part of our Business BTEC course we, the Year 13 Business Studies class, had to organise and run an event. We decided to run a Laser Tag event,

the first that the school has ever ran and one of the biggest and most complicated activities to organise.

The event was carried out on the last day of term before the Christmas holiday on 16th December 2016. Choosing this date meant that we only had five

weeks to prepare, that may seem like enough time, but there are many behind the scenes aspects to organise like the insurance and risk assessments. We also had to meet with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to get approval to run the event, which took several weeks!

We arranged a meeting with the SLT which Poppy Devlin, Beth Foskett and Will Heron attended. They were impressed with our organisational skills, however, they still had a few reservations which needed to be eradicated before they would give us the go ahead. This meant that we had to cancel the assemblies we had planned for the following week, which we had organised believing that the event would be approved at the first meeting. This set us back a week in our already short time frame, meaning we only had four weeks left until the event. We made the amendments and the event was finally approved and we could officially start the planning. A crucial part of the organisation was finding the guns to hire. We searched through many different companies until we found the company who gave us the best quality for the best price.

We promoted the event using posters, sending letters home, assemblies and reminding people in tutor. We ordered camouflage overalls and used them to make a ‘mannequin challenge’ but unfortunately we weren’t able to e-mail the video around because the file was too big to send.

Tickets for the event went on sale at the end of November which gave us just over two weeks to sell the tickets. We managed to sell over 60 tickets for the event, which gave us four games.

On the day of the event school ended at 12:10 and our first game started at 12:45, giving us a short amount of time to set up and decorate the ‘battle field’. We contacted a local army store, Army Surplus Trowbridge, who kindly gave us use of two different

coloured camouflage army jackets for the players to wear so they could easily tell who was on the opposite team. Each game had a briefing beforehand explaining the different laser tag games they were going to be playing and how the guns worked. The games then lasted for 30 minutes, give to take, and were followed by hotdogs, crisps and drinks.

Everyone who played enjoyed themselves, as did all of the business class who organised it. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the teachers that helped out, especially Mr Cooper who let us have use of the school until late and who made us laugh with his skilful and stealthy tactic of lying down behind one of the obstacles on the battlefield.

We thoroughly enjoyed it and we hope that it will not be the first and last laser tag event the school runs!

Mr Clarke, Head of Business and Enterprise
