GOVERNORS WORD

Our vision for the school includes the ambition that we want Matravers to be a world class centre for teaching and learning at the heart of the Westbury community.

That of course means we want to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for our students which will enable them to fulfil their goals in life.

But it also says something about our desire to work closely with other schools in the area, sharing expertise and learning from one another’s best practice.

A number of Matravers governors were represented at a recent governor training session hosted at Bitham Brook Primary. It was good to meet with colleagues from other schools and get ourselves up to speed with the latest developments in governance.

On a lighter note, it was a joy to be in the audience for the final performance of Oliver! last term. What a show! Great staging, acting and singing. A big well done to all involved. And, once more, we couldn’t have done it without the help and support of our primary partners who supplied the younger members of the cast. Every performance was a sell-out. We’re grateful to people from Westbury (and beyond) for making these shows such great occasions for performers and other audience members alike.

This term’s Lions’ Concert was also a highly enjoyable community event, showcasing the amazing talent of school children from the Westbury area. Another packed house. Matravers’ Head of Music Mrs Sorga even had the audience singing. Probably just as well the children drowned us out. Thanks to Westbury Lions for their support.

A key priority for the governing board this year is to attract investment into our site to ensure that the school has the buildings and facilities that our staff and students deserve. We intend that the community will also benefit from upgrades to the site, including other local schools.

There has never been a better time for children and young people to be educated in the Westbury area. It

used to be the case that a number of schools were rated Requires Improvement by Ofsted. Now with educational standards on the up, all have been judged at least Good. That is an incredible achievement for all the governors, headteachers, staff and children involved.

A special word of congratulations to our friends at Westbury Infants on their recently announced Good Ofsted. As a governor there as well as here it was great to witness the school making the rapid improvements needed to secure that judgement.

As well as strengthening links between local schools, Matravers is reaching out to employers and voluntary groups in the community to further enrich the education we offer our students.

Our governing board is drawn from a range of local stakeholders who are determined that the school plays its part in giving the young people of Westbury the best possible start in life.

Together we can do it.

Guy Davies,

Chair of the Board of Governors
