FOREWORD

I am delighted to welcome you to the magnificent Matravers Spring Edition Newsletter. It seems only a moment ago that students and staff returned in January rested and re-energised.

Students once again continue to settle well to their work with full focus on achieving their potential. We are looking forward to another packed Easter School to support students in their run up to their final exams.

I am proud that one of our core values as a school is “Creativity”. We relate to this as a community by embedding confidence and self-belief within our students and by inspiring a passion for learning which extends to every member of our school.

The front cover for this edition perfectly captures the essence of this value and is taken from our hugely successful recent production of Oliver. I was extremely proud and honoured to be part of this show. For the first time we included students from our primary community on stage which really brought a wider sense of the Westbury community into the heart of the school. I am delighted that we embrace the Arts at Matravers so passionately. Students benefit greatly from them, not only in terms of performing but also in terms of developing their strength of character within.

I have been updating you over the last few months on our site developments. We have been working hard behind the scenes to deliver our Site Master Plan for the school. This aims to deliver a world-class facility to house the world-class education that we offer. I am delighted to be able to update you on a few things:

i. Over the summer the Main Block in the school will benefit from £1,000,000 investment to replace windows, doors and probably roof. This will provide a far more pleasant and comfortable learning environment for students.

ii. We are in the final stages of planning to re-surface our existing tennis courts with an astro-turf facility this summer. This will enable students to benefit from an enhanced range

of sports that we can offer alongside providing a first-class facility for students to use. This will also help benefit the wider community who will be able to hire this space. This may well become flood-lit in due course.

iii. Our Priority School Building Programme (PSBP2) continues to progress well. We now expect work to begin in the Autumn Term 2017 and be completed in the Autumn Term 2018. This project will see a new 3-story block built on the current car park which will contain general classrooms, 3 Computing suites, a range of specialist science labs, studios and demo labs, Design Technology spaces alongside new student toilet facilities. The block will be fully accessible with a lift. We are currently about to begin the design phase of the project. The existing block will be demolished and landscaping will take place across the site. Additional car parking provision will be put in place.

I’m sure you’ll agree that these are exciting times for the school and I am delighted that the above projects will benefit your son/daughter over the next few years.

I do hope that you enjoy this Newsletter and take time to read about all the fantastic things that have taken place over the Spring Term. I know you’ll agree that Matravers is a very special place and we are quite unique in all that we offer for our students, particularly our “outstanding” range of extra-curricular activities.

And finally, as exams draw closer once again, I would remind our students of what can be achieved through hard work, especially the kind of focussed revision and practice that takes place in the final weeks. I encourage anyone who is seeking motivation for their studies to reflect upon the successes of our students in the past. Working with their teachers and taking responsibility for their own progress will bring our young women and men the rewards that will unlock the doors of opportunity in the future.

My best wishes for a wonderful Easter; try not to eat too much chocolate!

Dr Simon Riding, Headteacher
