HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

BUPA CARE HOME

On the 9th of December, the Year Thirteen Health and social class went to the Bupa Care Home in Westbury to bring some Christmas cheer to the residents and staff.

Before we went to the care home the class and I prepared a Christmas quiz all about the different aspects of Christmas which range from the food we eat to the songs which we sing. The quiz was a huge success, with everyone learning something new about Christmas and at the same time making new and rekindling old friendships.

We also baked two Victoria sponges for the residents to enjoy and we shared it with them after finishing the quiz and seeing their incredible scores- with the highest being 19/20!! Whilst indulging on our cakes, stories were told from both generations with smiles and laughter which lit up the room.

All the students had a fantastic time and we hope that the residents, along with the staff, did too; but one thing was for sure, everyone came away feeling festive!!

TOTALLY VIRTUAL BABIES In January the two Health and Social groups received some training on how to care for a virtual baby! The idea behind this project is to put teenagers off having a baby until they are totally ready. So once the Mother’s Union had told us how to care for them and we had worked in groups to discuss how hard or easy being a Mum or Dad is, we put our names down for a weekend of actually looking after a baby.

We tried to make sure we were on at the same time as a friend so we had a bit of a support network if things went wrong! This was good too as if we went out during the day with our babies, people

would stare and judge and it was easier to do this with a friend as backup.

The weekend on the whole was SO TIRING as the baby cried so many times for various reasons and you have to stop what you are doing to care for it. Before the project I think most of us thought looking after a baby would be easy! How wrong we were!! Most of us were really tired during Monday’s lessons having been

up for quite a lot of the weekend.

I think we all now know how much our parents have done for us and also I think we will all wait until we are in a healthy relationship before considering a baby as they really need all your time. They cost much more money than we thought too.

Overall it was a really good project and we’d like to thank all the Mother’s union and Miss Savage for organising it.
