MUSIC LIONS CONCERT

Another year, another Lions concert. By now this is an event which is firmly planted in the calendar of every school in Westbury. It is renowned for its exciting atmosphere and enthusiastic singing and this year was no exception. The theme was ‘Musical Theatre’ which allowed Matravers to once again show off the fantastic work from Oliver. To suit the occasion, though, it was not a staged performance but instead was a medley of 6 songs, put together as a concert performance and showcasing performances from the youngest of students (Callum Sinden, Year 7 as Oliver) through to our eldest (Charlie Waller, Year12 as Nancy). It was the perfect contribution for Matravers to give at this year’s concert.

Our primary schools also shone. From the opening number ‘Singing in the Rain’ by the littlies from Westbury Infant school to the Lion King medley performed by Year 5 and Year 6 from Bratton Primary school, the programme was filled with well-known family favourites. The children and the teachers worked very hard to put their items together and this showed in the quality of their pieces.

As usual there was a joint song, which all the schools learned and which everyone sang together at the beginning and the end of the concert. This year it was ‘The Five Pennies’ from the musical film of the same name featuring Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong. You may not be familiar with the

film but the song was perfect for our concert, with each of the 5 pennies being a special quality to help enrich our lives, such as hopes, dreams, love, laughing and dancing. During the concert, the audience even showed their own singing talent, learning a song called ‘Goodnight’ which was then performed alongside ‘The Five Pennies’ in the finale.

We are really lucky in Westbury to have such a close-knit school community and I hope there will be many more Lions concerts to bring us all together and celebrate music in our community. Many, many thanks to the Lions for sponsoring the event and for their ongoing generous support of music in our schools.
