SIXTH FORM
All members of the Sixth Form celebrated the New Year with mock exams in the first week of January! This has given teachers a clear understanding of progress made by the students to that point, allowing for focused intervention in the run-up to the summer exams. Interventions range from support for individual students by the University of Bath, mentoring by adults from the local community, one-to-one support sessions by teachers and educational input by graduates in specific subjects. With the on-going reforms to the post-16 educational landscape, especially the de-coupling of AS and A2 qualifications, we have more time to work with Year 12s to ensure they are following the correct pathway for them, making changes where appropriate. Hopefully, this will all help bring our students the success they deserve, not only in the forth-coming exams, but also in progressing onto universities and apprenticeships.
Our current Year 13s have enjoyed much success in securing university places for next year for a wide range of subjects, from English to Theatre Studies, Law to Korean Studies, Business Administration to History. They have secured places in a wide range of universities from across the country, and many have impressed enough to be offered unconditional places, meaning their places are not dependant on examination results. We also have one student who has gained a place on an impressive course focusing on the fashion industry, which has been created by some of the major fashion retailers in central London. The focus of these students now falls squarely on preparing for their exams, while ensuring they have the financial arrangements in place for their future studies. If there are any parents who wish to discuss student finance further, please contact me at the school.
The Year 12s are just about to embark on their programme to support with deciding upon future destinations. This will include workshops on Higher Education and trips to a UCAS Convention at the University of Bath (3 April) and to a Next Steps Convention at Wiltshire College (25 April). There are some big decisions to be made and we will support our students every step of the way. To help inform these decisions and to support applications, all Year 12 students are being asked to arrange a week of work experience (Monday 3 July-Friday 7 July). If you are able to offer a
work experience placement, or know someone else who can, please contact me at the school.
On Friday 27 February, we were visited by Lord Rosser as part of the Peers In Schools programme, designed to explain the role of the House of Lords to students across the country. He spoke to the entire Sixth Form before giving an hour of his time to the History A level students, allowing
for a more intimate question and answer session. With so many ‘interesting’ political things going on in the world recently, this was a great opportunity to hear from someone who spends their working life in the Palace of Westminster. On the back of this visit, Lord Rosser has been kind enough to invite us to bring a number of our students for a personalised tour of the House of Lords and House of Commons later in the year.
Many Sixth Form students recently excelled themselves on a First World War trip to Ypres, Belgium. The set an excellent example for the many younger students to follow on the trip, and approached the visits to various cemeteries, monuments and places of historical interest with intelligence and sensitivity. Responsibility is something our current Sixth Formers are taking to heart, whether it be in regularly supporting younger students with their reading, or in playing leading roles on the student council. There is also a Sixth Form Committee, which is working on a number of projects, including a reward system for post-16, enhancing facilities in the school for students and sports and other extra-curricular activities.
We are currently completing the application and interview process for places in next year’s Year 12. While we have had many applications already and are likely to be over- subscribed, I would encourage late applications to be handed in as they will be judged on their merits. The Sixth Form curriculum had been broadened further for next year, and will include more vocational subjects than ever before.
