GEOLOGY
ANOTHER TERM, ANOTHER FIELD TRIP
In preparation for their A Level Coursework the Year 13 Geologists visited Lavernock Point in Penarth South Wales. On the visit they collected data including the rock types and fossil groups of a bed famous for containing a plethora of Jurassic aged organisms. The aim of the enquiry is to establish the environment in which the rocks were deposited. It may shock you to think that 190 million years ago the UK was in a similar position to the Seychelles; submerged in shallow, tropical oceans.... Continental drift has certainly changed that!
As always with Matravers Students the work that’s been produced and the quality of data collected is exceptional. The group also showed their creative skills in modelling the “Evolution of a Geologist!”, as seen in the photo .The beauty of field trips is the simple

transfer of skills from classroom to the real world, something Geology is famous for!
ICELAND 2018
The Geology and Geography department are planning a visit to Iceland in February half term 2018. This is open to any student studying the subjects. This really is a once in a life time offer to experience the wonders of Iceland for a very reasonable price. When in Iceland we will be: Glacier walking, studying hydrothermal activity, come within touch distance of volcanoes, drenched by some of Europe’s and the worlds largest waterfalls, relaxing in the Blue Lagoon, hopefully witness the Northern lights and MUCH MUCH MORE!
