YEAR 8
I cannot believe that we are already more than half way through Year 8 (it only seems like yesterday the students were visiting us as nervous and excited Year 6s!)
It continues to be a busy and productive time for the students in Year 8, as you’ll read we have been organising events to raise money for charity, taking part in world book day, visiting Bath University to raise aspirations and, of course, all of this is on top of the usual high expectations we have of students as they go about their everyday activities in lessons.
We continue to develop a high level of recognising achievements and Year 8 have embraced the revised achievement points system busily collecting rewards for their endeavours in school.
Through these pages I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into life as a Year 8 student.
BATH UNIVERSITY – FUTURES DAY VISIT
Before we left I asked the students whether they had a clear idea what they would like to do for a future career – 23 said they had either “no idea” or a “bit of an idea.” When we returned to school I asked the same question – this time 15 students had a “very clear idea” and 11 had “some idea.” It’s fantastic that in such a short amount of time the students were able to develop their ideas about the future.
Student highlights of the day included the tour of the campus, being able to talk to existing students, finding out generally about student life, exploring careers in more detail and all the available options too. They all enjoyed collecting herds of pompom animals as rewards for engaging with the activities!
TUTEE OF THE MONTH As we have done since the start of Year 7 we continue to celebrate Tutee of the Month in our weekly assemblies. Students receive a certificate, badge and a small sweet treat in recognition of their efforts.
On 31st January, myself, Mr Bond and 27 Year 8 students had the pleasure of visiting Bath university. We were invited to attend the “Futures Day” to encourage our students not only to seriously consider applying for university in the future but also to explore the different courses and routes which can be taken to get there. The day’s activities included a tour of the campus, meeting and interviewing students from different further and higher education establishments, exploring different career paths and a personality quiz to see which types of job might suit each individual.
