Paterson Great Falls National Park 주니어 레인저가 되어 국립공원의 자연보호에도 앞장서고 미국역사도 배워요.


어린 아이들을 위한 체험 학습 프로그램은 사실 이름뿐인 경우가 많다. 특히 공공 부문에서 만든 프로그램일수록 이러한 가능성(?)이 더욱 높 은게 슬픈 현실이다. 아이들의 관심을 이끌만한 눈높이를 맞추기가 우선 어려울 뿐더러 공공에서 비영리로 운영하는 자원들을 이용해 프로그 램을 만드는 것 차제가 무에서 유를 창조하는 것처럼 여러 방면에서 투자가 많이 필요한 탓이다. 때문에 재미없고 비효율적인 어린이 공공 교 육 프로그램이 쉽게 만들어지고 쉽게 사라지는 걸 많이 보아왔다. 이런 선입견에 신선한 자극이 된 것이 여름 방학 특집으로 기획 취재된 주니 어 레인저 프로그램. 국립공원관리공단에서 만든 쥬니어 레인저 프로그램은 웹 사이트를 통해 미국 전역의 각 국립공원마다 숨겨진 유물, 자 연 명소, 미국의 역사, 환경 및 동물 보호 방법 등 어린이들의 궁금증을 다방면으로 일으키게 잘 구성된 책자를 다운로드 받아 스스로 관련 지 식을 습득할 수 있도록 되어있다. 이런 사전 학습을 통해 쥬니어 웹 레인저가 되면, 자연 보호에 관심 있는 시민 연대의 일원으로 인정 받는다. 또한 사전 학습을 마친 해당 공원에 책자를 들고 숨겨진 장소나 유물을 찾기와 같은 현장 체험 학습도 더불어 가능하도록 구성되어 있다. 카일 라와 함께 찾은 뉴저지 패터슨에서 커다란 폭포와 클래식한 건물의 공장들, 그리고 옛 기차가 놓여진 박물관을 봤을 때 예상치 못한 곳에 이런 곳이 있었나하며 놀라워 했었다. 하지만 국립 공원 관리 공단의 쥬니어 레인저 프로그램을 알지 못했다면 폭포가 미국의 실질적 독립은 물론 강력한 경제대국의 꿈과 비전이 담긴 역사적 장소이자 자연을 지혜롭게 이용한 결과물이라는 사실을 놓치면서 그저 삼분의 감동으로 끝났을 것이다. 책자를 통해 평범해 보이는 공원 이 곳 저 곳을 호기심으로 찾아다니는 카일라를 통해 탐험과 재미 그리고 온라인과 필드 트립을 결합 하여 역사, 경제, 자연에 대한 관심을 생생하게 일깨워주고 어려서부터 시민으로서의 연대감을 키워주는 주니어 레인저 프로그램이 청소년들 을 건강하고 지혜로운 인간이자 시민으로 성장시키는데 커다란 기여를 할거라는 확신이 섰다.


A waterfall, statues, a museum, and nature are all things that you can see at the Paterson Great Falls National Park. This majestic place is located in The Garden State. Yep, that’s right, New Jersey. At the Paterson Great Falls National Park you can learn so much, become a junior ranger, and spend some time with your family and friends. Have you ever heard of a guy named Alexander Hamilton? Well, he was a person with a big dream for developing his country, U.S.A. And with that dream of his, he helped make a difference in the future for Paterson. Alexander actually left college to fight in the Revolutionary War and he was an important aide for George Washington who is now known as, the first president of the United States. Not only did Hamilton believe in hard work and the importance to learn, but also that a new nation should not be dependent of other nations. He also thought that the new nation should have a strong economy as well as a secure one. So with that belief, in 1791, he helped create an investment corporation called the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures. (S.U.M). He visualized the use of waterpower to use

for manufacturing and industry. His vision of this became real when the S.U.M planned the very first industrial city in America that uses this technique and that place, is Paterson. Here, you can also become a Junior Ranger, even if you’re not able to visit a national park. This is possible because you can go online and do all of your activities there. You can experience doing many things that you have never done before, like helping a baby turtle reach the sea, or even being a spy. If you become a Junior Ranger, you will officially be a member of other people that want to learn about nature and their environment. This is a way to get to know your surroundings better and learn all about what goes on in the wild. To become a Junior Ranger, first, you have to visit www.nps.gov/webrangers. Then, you set up your ranger station and then your all set! See how easy that is? Now you can explore National Parks online.
