JUNIOR REPORTER Book Review Hunger Games


“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!” The Hunger Games is a cruel event that consists of a boy and girl from each district in Panem which fights until death. While these children between the ages 12 and 18 are striving to stay alive throughout the several weeks, the fortunate residents stay home and watch these kids die. Panem, the remains of North America after it was destroyed, was separated into 13 districts. The districts all had their own job whether it was agriculture, seafood, coal mining, etc. The Capitol has control over Panem and when district 13 rebels against their demands, it turns into rubble. The Games is an annual reminder to any citizens about the severe consequences of revolting in opposition to the Capitol. Each year, 24 children are picked out of thousands of names to participate. Unfortunately, Katniss Everdeen’s beloved sister, Primrose was chosen as one of the tributes from District 12. Katniss, who is sixteen years old, hunts and cares for her traumatized mother who had sweet Primrose after her father passed during a mine explosion. Due to the amount of time spent in the woods hunting illegally, she has developed great skills in archery. Not being able to let her sister compete against the other tributes and possibly get murdered, Katniss volunteers. During the tough weeks, she faces betrayal, trust, fear, anger and realization. The book is packed with action along with a pinch of romance with her “bread savior” or Peeta who also happened to be a tribute from District 12. For the most part, I actually tend to stay away from action stories. However, many of my classmates and friends recommended this best-selling novel. I was not disappointed. Suzanne Collins did a fantastic job merging different genres altogether to make it work. The writing triggered many emotions in me. I laughed at the relationship between Peeta and Katnisss’ mentors, Effie and Haymitch, because of their love-hate conversations. I teared when Katniss had to watch her new friend die in her arms. I raged at the unfairness of the luxurious districts and the struggling districts. I felt excitement as Katniss planned her next move. The pieces fit like a puzzle. I absolutely fell in love with Katniss and Peeta. They both sacrificed themselves for people they love. Katniss replaced Primrose in the Hunger Games and Peeta had a beating from his mother for giving bread to Katniss. They both

are brave and courageous. Katniss stood out because she was hit with so many tragedies, yet she stood her ground. Peeta’s love for Katniss was captivating because he had a crush on her since they were five. He took risks during the Game to make sure she was safe. Despite all that, the book doesn’t seem appropriate for children under the age of 12. Some scenes are too gruesome and the idea of the story may be too hard for young readers to grasp. For instance, I find the conception of children killing each other for the pleasure of viewers very disturbing. Overall, this book is a great read if you are interested in action and you aren’t afraid to visualize some grim images.


“즐거운 헝거 게임! 확률은 여러분에게 유리할 수도 있다!” 헝거 게임은 판 엠의 각 지역에서 각각 한 명씩 뽑힌 소년 소녀들이 모여서 서로 죽을 때 까지 싸우는 잔인한 행사다. 12살에서 18살 사이인 이 아이들은 몇 주 동 안 살아남기 위해 고군분투하고, 운 좋은 거주자들은 집에서 편히 이 아이 들이 죽어가는 것을 지켜본다. 폐허가 된 북미대륙에 세워진 판엠은 13개 의 지역으로 나뉘어 있는데, 모든 지역은 농업이든, 수산업이든, 탄광업이 든 각자의 일을 가지고 있다. 판엠은 캐피톨이 통제하는데, 캐피톨의 요구 에 저항한 제13지구는 바로 폐허가 되었다. 이 게임은 캐피톨에 대항해 반 란을 일으켰을 시 초래할 심각한 결과를 모든 시민들에게 일깨워주는 연례 행사이다. 매년 몇 천 명의 아이들 중 24명의 아이들이 뽑혀서 게임에 참가 한다. 불행히도 카트니스 에버딘의 사랑하는 동생 프림로즈가 제 12지구의 제물로 뽑히게 되었다. 16세의 카트니스는 사냥을 하면서, 광산 폭발사고로 남편을 잃은 후 프림로즈를 낳고 정신적 외상 증후군을 앓고 있는 엄마를 돌보고 있다. 숲 속에서 불법으로 사냥을 하며 보낸 시간 덕에 카트니스는 활쏘기에 있어서 대단한 능력을 갖게 되었다. 카트니스는 동생이 다른 제 물들과 싸우다 죽임을 당하게 할 수 없어서 헝거 게임에 자원했으며, 혹독 한 몇 주 동안 배신, 믿음, 공포, 분노, 자각 등과 마주했다. 이 책은 액션으 로 채워져 있을 뿐 아니라 카트니스에게 빵을 준 은인 피타와의 로맨스도 담고 있는데, 피타 역시 제 12지구에서 온 제물이었다. 대체적으로 나는 액션 이야기는 피하는 편이다. 하지만 많은 친구들이 이 베 스트셀러 소설을 추천했고, 역시 날 실망시키지 않았다. 여러 장르를 합쳐 서 이야기로 만든 수잔 콜린은 정말 대단한 일을 해냈다. 이 글은 내 안에 있 는 여러 감정들을 자극했다. 피타와 카트니스의 조언자인 에피와 헤이미치의 관계는 그 둘 사이의 애증의 대화로 날 웃음짓게 했고, 카트니스가 자신의 품에 안긴 새로 사귄 친구의 죽음을 지켜봐야만 했을 때는 날 눈물짓게 했 다. 부유한 지역과 어렵게 사는 지역 간의 불평등함에는 분노했고, 카트니스
