Mid summer Ni gh t Swin g “당당하고 자유롭게 표현하기!”

When I joined the Midsummer Night Swing event for kids hosted by the Lincoln Center, I was able to meet a famous and a talented dancer, Mr. Rodney Lopez. He led other kids and me to the world of dance. Unlike my expectations, I was not only able to learn how to dance Swing, but Merengue, Tango, and Stomp, too. Each
dance has a different style and its own unique feature. Mr. Lopez also taught us each dance in a fun way. For example, he made us hold hands in the shape of a pancake to explain how to hold hands with our dance partners for Merengue. The other kids and I learned all the dances quickly by his unique teach- ing way. Well, let me ex- plain to you how to dance Meren- gue, Tango, Swing and Stomp. The Merengue has eight beats and it is very simple. If you know how

to walk, move your hips, and count to eight, you are ready to go! Now, how simple is that? When you are doing the Tan- go, you have to be very serious. The Tango can also be complicated. If you mix up all of the moves, it can be frustrating, but once you get the hang of it, you will know everything like the back of your hand. The Tango has five beats and it feels like a rhythmic sword fighting. The Swing has six beats and has a smooth feeling like a bird soaring through the air. Right after learning to dance Swing, we met great guests from the New York Youth Dance Company. Although they looked the same age as me, they danced amazingly. They performed the Jibe, Tango and Merengue in their pretty dancing costumes. They looked extremely happy, but they also seemed to be serious about their dancing. After their performance, we learned to dance Stomp by making a line with the youth dancers. Un- like the Swing, the Stomp requires you to take step by step and it feels like a robot walking. It was fun, too. While I was dancing, I felt happy to be a part of the program. When it comes to dancing, I can be shy. To tell you the truth, it is not my favor- ite thing to do. However, I had a wonderful time and I hope I will be
