LOSING FAITH by Denise Jaden
Can religion push someone’s mental stability far enough that a nightmare can transpire in the real world? After Faith, Brie’s sister, suddenly dies, Brie is not convinced that her sister lost her life while tumbling off a cliff. Just like any other siblings, Brie and Faith never had the same interests. Al- though Brie went to church every Sunday, Faith went to church almost every day. Unlike her sister, Faith and her close friend, Celeste, drove to church and praised for the entire night. Without a doubt, Faith was her parents’ favorite. Meanwhile, Brie stood in the shadow of her elder sister. Why did Brie feel like she knew that her sister’s unforeseen death wasn’t just a suicide like the police’s investigation? While her parents mourned the terrible loss of Faith, Brie goes undercover to find out the truth of her sis- ter’s passing. Before her sister was announced dead on the mountain near her own house, Faith had dropped Brie off at a party looking gloomy and depressed. Obviously, Faith’s different aura caught Brie’s suspicion but she shook the uneasy feeling off. Soon after, she was called to the police sta- tion and discovered that her sister had left forever. Nothing was left behind except for a strange sticker on Faith’s car, the same sticker that was pasted to Celeste’s car and also found at a new boy’s house. What happens when a new boy named Alis and his unsavory sister, Reena come into the picture? Everything takes an awful turn and it seems as if they are living a curse. This novel is a combination of death, tragedy, mystery and religion. Who knew that everything can fit so perfectly like a puzzle? Denise Jaden did a great job explaining the bone-chilling conflict by raising suspicion on each character. I have to admit that when I first purchased this book, the synopsis and title made me feel a little unsure about the story. Now I know what peo- ple mean when they say “don’t judge a book by its cover”. I was completely blown away. My eyes were scanning the book from side to side to absorb the mysterious clues. The way people think about religion can really affect how they think about
the story line. This novel explores the religion of Christianity and some read- ers may think that the author is insulting the religion. However, as the story goes on, readers will understand how the hardships of being a perfect, religious and flawless daughter can affect a person. I can relate to this novel myself. As the result of one of my family members passing, I also had many troubled days when nothing seemed to be going the way it was supposed to. Like Brie, who was dealing with the death of her sister, I went through many distressing moments. Of course, I realized that I wasn’t by myself and had people around me. Everyone has a secret. Whether if it’s bad or good, it can change the course of a person’s entire life and sometimes it doesn’t go as planned.

종교가 악몽 같은 현실 속에서 얼마만큼이나 마음의 안정을 찾아줄 수 있을까 요? 브리의 언니인 페이트가 갑자기 죽었을 때, 브리는 언니가 낭떠러지에서 떨 어져 죽었다고 확신할 수 없었습니다. 다른 형제들처럼 브리와 페이트는 같은 것 을 좋아해 본 적이 없었습니다. 브리의 가족은 매주 일요일에 교회에 갔지만 페 이트는 거의 매일 교회에 갔습니다. 그녀의 가족과는 다르게 페이트와 그녀의 친 한 친구 셀레스트는 교회에 가서 매일 밤 찬양을 드렸지요. 의심할 여지없이 페 이트는 부모님이 가장 좋아하는 딸이었습니다. 한편, 브리는 언니의 그늘 속에 있었습니다. 그런데 어째서 페이트의 뜻하지 않은 죽음이 경찰의 조사처럼 단순 한 자살이 아니라는 느낌을 갖게 되었을까요. 부모님이 끔찍한 죽음에 슬퍼하고 있을 때 브리는 비밀리에 언니의 죽음의 대한 진실을 찾으려 합니다. 언니가 집 근처 산에서 죽었다는 이야기를 듣기 전 페이 트는 우울하고 침울해 보이는 모습으로 브리를 파티에 데려다 주었습니다. 당연 히 평소 같지 않은 페이트의 모습이 브리로부터 의심을 사게 만들었지만 그녀는 그 불안한 느낌을 떨쳐버렸습니다. 이후 그녀는 경찰의 전화를 받고 언니가 다시 는 돌아오지 않는다는 사실을 알게 되었지요. 단서는 그녀의 차 안에 있는 것 말 고는 아무것도 없었습니다. 그것은 셀레스트의 차와 어떤 소년의 집에 붙어있는 것과 같은 스티커였습니다. 알리스라는 소년과 그의 불미스러운 여동생 리나가 이 상황 속에 들어온다면 어떻게 될까요? 모든 것이 죽음이라는 이름의 끔찍한 저주가 됩니다. 죽음, 비극, 미스터리 그리고 종교. 이 모든 것이 하나의 퍼즐처럼 맞춰질지 누 가 알았을까요? 데니스 제이든은 각각의 캐릭터들이 품은 의심에 의한, 살을 에 는 듯한 갈등을 잘 풀어 놓았습니다. 이 책을 처음 샀을 때 제목과 시놉시스를 보고 내용에 대해 조금 확신이 들지 않았던 것은 인정합니다. 하지만 저는 이제 야 사람들이 왜 “겉만 보고 속을 판단하지 말라”고 하는지 알 것 같습니다. 저 는 이 책에 완전히 빠져버렸습니다. 저의 눈은 곧 하나로 이어질 미스터리한 단 서들을 흡수하기 위해 책을 읽었습니다. 이 책은 좋은 책이지만 사람들이 종교 에 대해 가지고 있는 생각이 스토리 라인에 대해 생각하는 것에 영향을 미칠 수 있겠지요. 또한 기독교 신앙에 대해서 이야기하고, 믿음에 대한 모욕이 될 수도 있습니다. 그렇지만 내용이 진행될수록 독자들은 완벽한 신앙인과 완벽한 딸이 되는 것에 대한 어려움을 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 물론 이 이야기를 저에게 대입할 수도 있습니다. 저 역시 가족 중 한 명이 세상을 떠난 것 때문에 아무것 도 제대로 흘러가지 않는 듯한 힘든 날들을 보냈었습니다. 하지만 저는 혼자가 아니라 주변에 많은 사람이 있다는 것을 깨달았지요. 모든 사람은 비밀을 가지 고 있습니다. 그것이 좋은 것이든 나쁜 것이든 사람의 인 생을 바꿀 수도 있고, 어떤 때는 계획된 대로 나아가지 않 을 때도 있겠지만요.
