P ADERBORN , SENNELA GER & DETMOLD 2012

Families are visited by a Home-Start volunteer while they feel they need help, which can be fore weeks or years. Families choose whether or not to accept Home-Start support and they can change their mind at any time. A volunteer will only visit on the invitation of the family. The approach varies according to the needs of each individual family.

Volunteers Volunteers are carefully selected for their friendliness, practical approach and understanding. They come from all walks of life, and usually have experience of parenting. They offer support in families’ own homes for, on average, between two and four hours a week.

They have been approved and have all attended a training course before being matched with families. In addition, criminal record checks and suitable person checks are undertaken.

Volunteers are there to listen, offer friendship in time of need, and practical help – for example, during outings or playtime.

Volunteers offer families an opportunity to build up their confidence, develop new skills and enjoy family life. They also encourage the families to use other resources available in the community.

Schemes

Each scheme is firmly rooted in the heart of the community it serves. Each scheme is run by an Organiser and is supported by a secretary. The Organiser is responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and the support of the volunteers, and for the careful matching of volunteers with the families, as well as to liaise with referrers. In addition to home-visiting support, many schemes also hold family group or drop-in sessions. These groups are an important opportunity for families to meet each other and form a wider support network.

Who can refer? Families can be referred to the local Home-Start scheme via their Health visitor, GP, Doctor, Unit Welfare Officer, Army Welfare Service, Social Worker, Padre, HIVE, Service Children’s Education, Relate, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Others and most importantly, Families can refer themselves.
