BFG Car Registration & Driver Licensing Information
As a general rule any vehicle owned by an entitled person must be registered with the BFGVLO.
CENTRALISED BFG VEHICLE LICENSING OFFICE (BFGVLO) A central office is in operation for Paderborn Garrison located in Building 218, Normandy Barracks, Sennelager. The office will carry out all BFG driving license testing, initial registrations and renewals, transfers and de-registration paperwork. For current opening hours see Punchlines magazine or call the BFGVLO.
BFG PERMIT/MATRIX TEST To drive or register any BFG registered vehicle you must hold a valid BFG 57 (Driving Permit). To apply for this Permit you must hold a full EU recognized driving licence (some other countries' licences are accepted). To obtain a BFG Driving Permit you must sit a European Matrix Test (tick test). Dependants, UKBCs and Civil Servants must sit the Matrix Test within the Garrison BFG VLO: military personnel must liaise with their unit's MT section. The BFG Driving Permit is valid for five years, or until the drivers' main licence becomes invalid.
German Driving Licence Holders will be issued with a BFG (Driving Permit) and are not required to sit a Matrix Test. Your BFG Driving Permit becomes invalid once you are posted outside BFG for more than 1 year.
Initial registration of a vehicle IMPORTANT! You have 45 days from the day your vehicle arrives in Germany to apply for BFG registration.
During the 45 days period of grace the BFG roadworthiness & light test is to be completed before the submission for an initial registration.
Failure to BFG register a tax-free/tax-paid vehicle within the required time frame will result in disciplinary and administrative action being taken.
A tax paid vehicle currently registered with some other licensing authority may be used in Germany only under such registration for a period not exceeding 45 days.
If the vehicle was previously BFG registered and is being re-imported into BFG, the applicant must obtain authority from SO2 G1 Vehicle Licensing to re-import and BFG register the vehicle.
BUYING A VEHICLE / INITIALLY REGISTERING A VEHICLE WITH BFG Please be aware that buying a vehicle that is not manufactured within the EU could prove expensive in the long term. The vehicle will have to obtain COC a German TÜV Gutachten if it is under 10 years old and does not have an EU TAN (European Type Approval Number).
Step by Step Guidance for Registering A Vehicle Step one: Apply for a BFG Form 80 (Special Importation Certificate) using a BFG Form 60 (obtainable from the Garrison Centralised BFG Licensing Office).
