Schloss Falkenburg Schloss Falkenburg is an old ruined castle dating from the Middle Ages. It stands on top of a prominent hilltop overlooking the Detmold-Berlebeck-Paderborn road, approximately 2 kms past the turn off for the Adlerwarte on the left hand side of the road. It is not immediately obvious from the road, but is in easy walking distance from the available car parking space, just off the main road. The enthusiastic and fit may take the direct route to the top, striking off immediately at right angles to the road. The less physical can follow the forest track leading from the car parking space, which brings the walker abreast of the castle, some 200 ft below the summit, where a convenient track leads to the top. There is little to be seen since funds as yet permitted excavation only near the original site of the keep. One of the main attractions of this spot is the magnificent view over the countryside.


Externstein


The Externsteine is an extraordinary collection of massive sandstone blocks at the edge of the Teutoburger Wald, just off the main road in Horn. Their geological origin is obscure, not being of similar structure to the local strata. Set in parkland, by an artificial lake, the stones, which are some 100 ft high, are galleried and have stairways cut into them. There is evidence of religious use; a carving is attributed to the monks of the 11th century. www.externstein.de
