Camping
There are more than 2,000 camping possibilities, so tenting can be excellent. Most camping grounds are open from April to September but several hundred stay open throughout the year. Local Tourist Information can offer help too. You will need your own transport if you’re camping since sites tend to be far from city centres.

The Youth Hostel (Jugendherberg) situation in Germany is arguably the best in the world, which is no surprise as the Germans pioneered the concept. There are more than 600 of them conveniently located throughout the country, ranging from big city properties in Hamburg to excellent locations for the outdoor enthusiast. Deutsches Jugendherbergswerk or DJH (Tel: 05231 74010, Hauptverband, 32754 Detmold), co-ordinates all affiliated Hostelling International (HI) in Germany and their handbook is a guide in which you can follow the basic details even if you don’t know much German. Almost all hostels are open all year. Visitors must be members of a Hostelling International – affiliated organisation. In theory, visitors under aged 27 get preference, but in practice prior booking or arrival determines who gets a room, not age. In Bavaria there is a strict maximum age of 27. Again, the HIVE will assist you in finding cheap accommodation.

The German rail system is one of the best in the world. The DB’s Inter-City Express and the faster ICE Sprinter trains offer ultra rapid services and special fares apply. On holidays and during the busy summer season, reservations are recommended especially for sleepers.
