Back To School - for many the summer holidays are now over and the school term has begun.

The emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people is at the heart of every parent, to ensure that young people have the best start in life and are ready to succeed. Bullying can happen to anyone at any age and is a signifi cant barrier affecting confi dence and general wellbeing and should not be dismissed as a normal part of growing up, given the potential short- term impact and long-lasting consequences. The Scottish Government is committed to preventing and tackling bullying wherever or however it arises.

Employment Growth

Offi cial statistics have been published showing continued employment growth in Scotland. Scotland has lower unemployment, higher employment and lower economic activity rates than the UK as a whole, showing that action taken by the Scottish Government has had a positive impact. Commitment to the social wage - including the council tax freeze, no tuition fees, free prescriptions and free concessionary travel - is giving Scottish households maximum protection at a time when other bills and infl ation are on a sharply rising curve. However, the latest fi gures show that there are absolutely no grounds for complacency. Whilst unemployment fi gures are down nationally, local fi gures are variable. In Renfrewshire employment rates have fallen from 82,600 in 2008 to 77,000 in 2010. This fi gure is disappointing given that there has been an improvement across Scotland as a whole, but we do not yet have the balancing fi gures of employment numbers in Renfrewshire as there is a lag of roughly ten months and the most-recent fi gures available date back to September 2010. Meanwhile, the Scottish Government is supporting 25,000 modern apprenticeships a year in order to help tackle youth unemployment; giving young people new skills to enter the workforce. The level of university graduates in employment has also risen from 458,500 in 2004 to 613,000 in 2010. Scotland has survived the deepest recession in recent memory and continued focus on boosting our economy will ensure it is well placed and well resourced to meet future challenges and economic opportunities. I have undertaken a number of local industry and education visits over the summer to understand business needs and this effort will continue.
