Young Carers Trip Doon The Water
Gryffe Valley Rotary Club tries to provide occasional day trips for groups of Renfrewshire young carers to give them some respite from the daily grind they face in looking after parents or siblings. A recent trip was organised on the Waverly and Community Convenor Neil McAllister tells the story.
“ We boarded at the Science Centre at 9.30am. Leaving around 10am in dry but coolish weather, the children were enthralled to see the Steamer spin around in the docks before setting sail doon the water.
This was their fi rst experience of a being on a steamer and we spent the fi rst hour answering questions and identifying various buildings and places en-route. They got a real kick going under the Erskine Bridge.
Several boats passed us and they had fun waving and cheering at them. As we passed the Tail of the Bank, the sun came out and lasted all the way to Largs. A Holland America cruise ship was cheered and then it was time to visit the engine room and the wee shoppee before we arrived in Largs.
A special lunch was laid on in-conjunction with Nardinis. This included the whole restaurant singing happy birthday to one child, as the large birthday cake with candles was paraded through out by the Nardini manager. This really was a day to remember for the boy (see a photo on Nardini twitter).
As a side issue many of the children had never had the opportunity to eat in such surroundings and to also to make their own selections from the menu. They were so excited.
The children then left for a visit to a play area in Ayr.
Without exception, the joy on the faces of the children and the way each said thank you says it all.”
The club is proud that it was able to make a small difference to those youngsters who struggle to support others, and thanks all those who contribute to it’s various activities to raise funds for such projects.
Special thanks are due to the Waverly and Nardinis for their assistance on this trip. The photo shows Neil and some of the young carers.
