local sports Rangers Charity Foundation Announces Partnerships For 2011/12

Veteran’s Charity Erskine Named As Community Partner The Rangers Charity Foundation’s National and Community Charity Partners for season 2011/12 were announced at Murray Park. Veterans’ charity Erskine will be the Foundation’s new Community Partner, while the relationship with National Partner -The Prostate Cancer Charity - will be extended for another year.

The Foundation has been able to make a signifi cant impact on The Prostate Cancer Charity’s aim to reach more men across Scotland with its vital message and Rangers fans have really engaged with the cause. The Foundation and the Charity believe that building upon the partnership for another season can make a real difference in the ongoing battle against prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men in Scotland with 2,700 new diagnoses every year.

The Foundation will work with Community Partner Erskine on projects centred around the Glasgow and Bishopton homes. The Foundation aims to raise around £20,000 towards 2 key projects; the Glasgow home’s replacement bed programme, which will provide residents with new ‘Electric Profi ling’ beds to help improve their independence, comfort and general health, and the refi tting of The Royal Scots Shop within the Bishopton home – a vital resource for residents and their guests.

Erskine Chairman Andrew Robertson said: “We are immensely grateful to the Rangers Charity Foundation for selecting Erskine as a Community Partner. We care for veterans of all ages and this is only possible because of the generosity of organisations like them. I cannot thank them enough.”

Connal Cochrane, Manager of the Rangers Charity Foundation commented: “Erskine has a proud history of caring for ex-service men and women and serving military communities and is a cause close to the hearts of many Rangers supporters. I am delighted we will be working with Erskine over the coming year and also continuing to support The Prostate Cancer Charity, with whom we have worked extremely well over the last 12 months. We have seen what has been possible over the last year and this has inspired us to develop our partnership further. We believe we can make a signifi cant impact on the work of this hugely deserving charity and reach even more men across Scotland.”

Stephen raises money for

Scotland’s veterans

An ex-Territorial Army soldier will don a Bergen and military kit in a bid to complete the Great Scottish Run half marathon in aid of Scottish veterans.

Stephen Dunn, 37, has set himself the gruelling challenge of carrying a 55lb pack for the duration of the 13-mile course as he attempts to raise funds for the veterans’ charity Erskine on Sunday 4th September.

This is the second time that Stephen has undertaken the challenge which was inspired from his Service in the early 90s with the 15th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Scottish Volunteers). As part of one of the toughest selection processes in the Armed Forces, new recruits are required to run and march for 10 miles carrying a 35lb pack, water and their personal weapon in under 2 hours. In 2009, Stephen managed to complete the run in 2hr 51mins and raised £525 for Erskine which provides care for more than 1,370 veterans each year.

Stephen, from Maryhill in Glasgow, is keen to repeat his success and raise awareness and funds for the charity which cared for his Uncle John at its home in Anniesland.

Stephen said: “I know all about the great work Erskine does for ex- service men and woman as my uncle was a resident in the Erskine Glasgow Home, until he peacefully passed away last summer. By visiting him, I could see the level of care and attention he and the other residents were receiving and knew this was a charity I had to do something for. In 2009, I decided to take part in the Great Scottish Run, but thought I needed to do something a bit quirky to raise awareness. I have decided to do the same thing again this year. Not being as fi t as I used to be, I doubt I’ll average the gruesome pace of 11:30 per mile, but it will be best effort all the way.”

Anchor Hockey Club 2nd team started thanks to The Advertizer….join our new team

Anchor hockey club is your local gents Hockey club, formed way back in 1923, with most of our players coming from Houston, Johnstone and the Paisley area.

We have had a great response to our recent requests in the advertiser for new players, with people of all ages joining us in recent weeks and months. So much so that we have started a 2nd team this season to allow our new players to develop their skills.

We have an excellent team spirit at Anchor, and any new player would be made to feel very welcome and will enjoy the way we train and play.

We train at Linwood on a Monday night at 7.30pm, and we play our home games at Linwood too, although we will be relocating for a few months whilst the Linwood pitch is re-laid, probably to Park Mains, Erskine. We have our own qualifi ed coaches, and as a result our coaching sessions are excellent and enjoyable, and tailored to everyone’s own standards.

Our squad ranges from 13 to almost 50 years old. If you are interested in coming along, either to try for the fi rst time, or if you have previously played hockey have been looking to start up again, or are playing at school and want to take your hockey to the next level, or if you maybe want a change of club, we would be really delighted to hear from you.

Call the club captain David Bone on 07811 352201 for an initial chat, or come along on Monday nights to meet us.
