IT Blog by Colin Fyfe
Computers are often objects primarily used for communication, information fi nding and storage and plain old document and work drudgery. However, never more so than now have online media and entertainment options been so popular. Whether playing catch up on the television with the BBC’s excellent and free iplayer, or checking out youtube for anything from guitar and art tuition to recent news footage; you will fi nd what you are looking for online. Here are a few things that I like to play with when I am on time out.
Youtube is often thought of as an online purveyor of pop-trash and ropey home videos, to be fair, probably with good reason, but scratch beneath the surface and you will be surprised. I am halfway through a series of hour long Physics lectures from Berkeley University; students pay thousands for this stuff!
As far as music media is concerned, Spotify wins out for me. A free music player that can not only document and fi le your own music, but also lets you choose from a vast music archive that is constantly added to and revised.
Finally, the one thing that I am using just now that has surprised me on a number of occasions is Twitter. If it sounds a little too much like social media for you then I can concur, but remember that you need not post anything anyway, and your name can be as false as you like. I am following various freelance journalists and technlology reviewers, Local weather experts, international earthquake sensors and the Mars expedition team. Why? Just because it is quite interesting.

The indoor session starts on the 7th September and new members are always welcome. The syllabus for the coming year is now up on our website –
http://www.gryffecameraclub.
co.uk. In September we plan to set up the workgroup groups – Portraiture, Night Photography and Macro are just some of the options. These offer a great opportunity to learn new skills or to hone existing ones in a friendly environment.
At the end of the month we have our fi rst guest speaker – Hunter Kennedy is coming along to talk about printing your Mono images. This should be very informative.
The images below are from Andy Stark, who lead an outdoor portrait night in Linwood last month. It was an extremely successful evening.
Is your camera not on speaking terms with you? Do you dread coming back home from holiday with even more washed-out, blurry pictures? We’ve all been there (we feel your pain!) – why not come along and get some tips (regrettably, we can’t solve your hangover or your sunburn)?
Venue: Kilmacolm New Community Centre, Room 1.01; Tuesday evening, at 7.30pm. Contacts: Billy Blair, Tel: 873383; Janice Stevenson, Tel 873595.
Be Warned - Roofing Scam !!!
A reader has asked us to highlight this. Door-to-door Salesmen are in the area, claiming to fi x all your roofi ng problems with a simple coating (paint !), guaranteed for life (?), with the added bonus of reducing your heating bills by improving the thermal effi ciency of your home!!!
Paint does not stop roof leaks, replacing the broken tiles that cause leaks does, and it’s going to be a lot cheaper. Applying a coating to the roof will not improve the “thermal effi ciency” of your home, it’s unlikely to have anymore effect than painting your ceiling!
If anyone is concerned about the condition of their roof, then our advice is to contact three reputable roofi ng fi rms and ask them to have a look and supply you with a written quote to remedy any problems; seems like common sense, but it is.

As the warm, balmy Kilmacolm summer days continue into September (what exactly did I put in that cocoa?), Camera Club members have been exploring more of our local countryside.
Most recently, we visited Portencross Castle and took a variety of shots before the failing light defeated us. A dusk-lit shot by Janice Stevenson is shown here.
We’re looking forward to launching into a new Camera Club season. Our opening night is Tuesday 27th September. The 2011/2012 Syllabus contains a bumper bundle of photographic goodies, including practical evenings with advice on all of the basic photographic techniques. In short, something for beginners and something for hard-bitten clickers.
