The Truth About Diets…
The fi rst thing to realise is that the term ‘diet’ applies to us all; we all have to eat. However, the media and press can portray this in a negative context causing confusion and infl uencing our views on what we should be eating on a daily basis.
The simplest approach to your diet is to stick to the hard and fast rules that we know to be true; to this end, I would like to dispel some of the more popular myths associated with food intake...
Cutting Out Carbohydrates: ‘No Carb’ or ‘Low Carb’ diets are widely believed to be the quickest and easiest way to drop weight. However, this can leave
you lethargic and unable to exercise properly. This type of diet is also unsustainable and therefore will lead eventually to regaining weight.
Skipping Meals: This can lead to low energy and an ineffi cient metabolism. It will also trigger your body’s ‘starvation’ mode; the next time you intake food your body will store more fat from that meal as a natural response. Ideally, you should try eat little and often throughout the day.
No Fat: Fat is an essential part of your diet and should not be removed entirely as it provides your body with insulation and supports vital organs. A balanced low-fat diet is ideal. Some ideas to reduce fat intake include removing skin from poultry, cutting fat off meat and eating fresh foods instead of pre-packed products.
Balance is the key. Instead of drastically altering one aspect of your diet you should look to try and control your portion sizes of a healthy, balanced diet. Eating from a side plate rather than a big dinner plate can help in controlling the volume of food intake.
A simple way to serve up healthy proportions is to fi ll one half of your plate with salad or vegetables and divide the other half between protein-rich meat, chicken, fi sh, egg or beans, and healthy carbs (potatoes, rice, pasta, pulses, bread or noodles).
Of course, your diet needs to be complemented with regular exercise to achieve the maximum benefi ts.

Local sailor wins Scottish Championship
At the recent Topper dinghy Championship at Helensburgh, held over the weekend of 23rd/24th July, it was local sailor Lewis Marr from Kilmacolm who came out on top as Scottish Champion for 2011. Lewis who sails from Largs Sailing Club and is a member of the Scottish Topper Squad and British Topper 4.2 Squad produced a very consistent performance in diffi cult light wind conditions to overcome a very competitive fl eet.
Lewis who trains all year round and travels regularly to England to compete in National Competitions, involving over 200 boats, was thrilled
at his success and has decided that Helensburgh is one of his favourite locations, having recently won a regional regatta at the same location.
His victory is a great confi dence boost before travelling to UK National Championships, which are being held in Scotland at North Berwick this year, and will have over 300 sailors competing. This will be followed by the World Championships in Dublin.
After a good start to the season, Lewis’s challenge is now to perform at a level to obtain selection for the higher level British Squads next year to progress his sailing aspirations on a UK level.
