Birkmyre Rugby Club

The Birkmyre Rugby Club mini section, for primary one to primary seven age groups, are training on Sunday 4th and Sunday 25th September. We are always delighted to welcome new members, so please come along to Birkmyre Park at 1pm and join in.

There are home matches against East Kilbride on Sunday 11th September and all support is welcome. The highlight last year, for the primary fi ve team, was to play during the half time interval at a Glasgow Warriors game something we hope to repeat this year.

From a Mini to a National

Birkmyre Rugby club are celebrating the achievement of the fi rst player to graduate from the minis to a Scotland squad. Siobhan McMillan (photo below - centre) is pictured with Gryffe pupil, Lauren Hagan, Castlehead Pupil Amanda Moore and Scotland U18 coach and current Scotland International player, Lindsay Smith. Siobhan has been playing rugby at Birkmyre since she was fi ve years old and has now graduated from having fun on a Sunday afternoon to aiming for a place in the Scotland ladies team. Lindsay is the SRU regional development offi cer for Renfrewhire and works with all the primary and secondary schools encouraging boys and girls to play rugby.

Setup only 9 years ago Birkmyre minis have gone from strength to strength with over 100 boys and girls taking part every Sunday at Birkmyre Park from 1pm.

Birkmyre Man helps launch Scottish Rugby’s new RBS Sponsorship Deal

Birkmyre team manager, Peter Haveron, was recently chosen to be one of only 100 representatives of Scottish club rugby to be part of the pre match build up in the World Cup warm up Scotland Vs Ireland game (which Scotland won by the way!).

Not only did Pete get to step on the hallowed turf holding a giant Scotland Shirt, but got suitably fed and watered as well. As part of the deal Pete has been doing a video documentary on Birkmyre and grass roots rugby, with any luck the SRU will use some of the footage on the website soon. Watch this space!

Training has continued at Birkmyre Park with strong number making the competition for places this year more exciting than ever. John Black and Fozzy have been working hard to keep the drills fun but focused on fi tness, skills and strength. The attitude of the players is the best seen in many years.

We have a busy couple of months of games coming up, but we are still looking for new players to keep the completion for places going. So if you want to train and play with Birkmyre please call Jon Harris on 07960151015 or team manager Peter Haveron on 07815090839 or come down to Training on Tuesday night at 7.30pm.

Dates: Sept 3rd Carrick (Home), Sept 10th Paisley (Away), Sept 17th McLaren (Away), Sept 24th Reserved date second round bowl.

Castle Semple Sailing Club Cucina Minucci Cup

CSSC was pleased to present its new Cucina Minucci cup to Donnie and Alan Gillies for their win on 14th August, with thanks to The Junction for sponsoring the event. The weather held with plenty of sun, and wind by the end of the afternoon. Eleven boats took part.

Early during the fi rst race, a sudden gust caught three boats unawares which ended in capsizes.

Later on, two of the three boats managed a head

on collision going round a buoy. The sometimes gusty winds meant plenty of concentration was required, with several comments of “I’m knackered” being heard at the end, but everyone seemed to have fun and enjoy themselves with the usual banter on and off the water.

Cadet Section

Duncan’s “pirate” cadets are increasing by the week. They sail on Wednesday evenings and Sunday morning, gaining confi dence all the time.

24hr Fund Raising Sailing Event in June

The theme this year was Pirates of the Caribbean. Despite the Scottish version of a heatwave, everyone who took part entered into the spirit of the weekend. The race started in true pirate style with a water pistol fi ght and missiles in the form of chocolates being thrown from boat to boat. The “winning” boat was the Green boat with Jack Sparrow as captain - however, this was not without an element of cheating as on a fl at calm Saturday afternoon the Green boat, at that point last in the race, was seen speeding across the loch at a great rate of knots. All was revealed when the safety boat appeared from the far side! hmmm! The safety boat then sabotaged the leading Blue boat by circling it several times.

Inevitably the rain came on Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday morning however spirits were not dampened and the weekend fi nished with an excellent barbecue at the end.
