local technology September Gadget Guide Travalo Perfume Atomiser TV Tech by Kenny McIntyre
Kenny McIntyre is a TV engineer and partner in Millennium Aerials with 28 years’ experience in the television reception industry.
He has agreed to write a regular feature for us, this being the fi rst of a series of articles for our readers.
The story of television has come a long way since John Logie Baird of Helensburgh made the fi rst black and white transmission in 1926. In my time the industry has gone from three channels through the additions of Channel 4 then 5, daytime tv, satellite multi-channel, reality tv, digital tv, interactive tv, High Defi nition tv (HD), Internet tv, timeshift tv and now the Digital Switchover offering Freeview HD channels including 4HD from a tv aerial available to everyone with a Freeview HDTV or set top box.
One of the most frequent questions I am asked would be “What is the best format for me to watch TV?” eg Freeview, BBC Freesat, Freesat from Sky of subscription to a monthly package i.e. Sky. My response would be “What are the circumstances the TV will be used in and how much is your budget?”
Freeview is available to everyone now and is the lowest cost system as numerous TVs can be connected to a good external aerial and all modern now have Freeview built in. The possible downside to a Freeview system, in an area covered by a relay transmitter, like Kilmacolm for example, is that only 34 TV and radio stations can be received.
BBC Freesat – an option with full coverage in all areas, is obtained through a 60cm satellite dish (same as Sky TV) and a satellite receiver or integrated satellite TV (Panasonic is the only TV brand available). This format offers 150 TV channels as well as radio stations. Again more than one Freesat box or TV can be connected to the one satellite dish.
Freesat from Sky is a system much the same as BBC Freesat but is more adaptable. The Sky satellite receiver has the facility to allow the same satellite TV programme to be viewed and controlled in other rooms. The benefi t of this feature means the viewer can watch satellite stations the bedrooms of kitchen, for example without the need for more than one Sky box.
Subscription TV with Sky, Virgin or BT offers the most comprehensive channel packages with wall-to-wall live sports. Basic packages (no Sports) start at £19.50 per month on a 12 month contract with Sky. Installation costs vary depending on the package chosen.
Personally I have a Freesat from Sky HD receiver connected to a satellite dish and Tv aerial with a return lead from the sky box to my attic amplifi er distributing to four rooms. This allows viewing of Freeview and Sky Freesat in all rooms in my home.
There are many choices out there and we can help you to design an individual system to suit your own needs.
