X-Bar HIPs and X-Drum LED fixtures add colour and atmosphere to entertainment venues ranging from Dazzles nightclub and Boleros Latin nightclub, to the ship’s comedy and jazz clubs.
Vlassopulos cited the energy savings and low-maintenance advantages of LED fixtures as reasons why Royal Caribbean has gone in this direction. “We struggle with lamp life and energy, so if we can find an LED alternative, we’re all over it,” said Vlassopulos. “When you look at something the size of Allure, it’s a huge advantage for us not to have to buy lamps, and not to have to climb up on the rig to change lamps.” What’s more, he added, thanks to the long life of LED lamps, the lighting in an area or room will always remain consistent. “Every time the venue’s used, it’s perfect. There aren’t two lights burnt out or whatever. So the integrity of the looks that the lighting designer created are kept. It’s practically ‘set and forget’.” Advances in technology from companies like Elation and Acclaim have made it possible for Royal Caribbean to transition toward using more LEDs in recent years, Vlassopulos said. “All of our lighting decisions are based on choosing the right prod- uct for the job, period. We won’t hesitate to keep researching and keep looking until we get it exactly the way we want, and if we find something that works better we’ll change it.”
Passenger comfort was a priority alongside usability and reliability. Crucial to this, as part of the lighting system, is Helvar’s 920 Router. The Router has been able to integrate the huge number of light sources into one ship-wide lighting control system that supports remote monitoring and controllability through the IP network. Integrat- ing the lighting with the ship’s AV and entertainment systems were also achieved through the Helvar Router system. Allure of the Seas is one of the most energy efficient and technologically advanced cruise liners ever built. In fact, both Oasis and Allure of the Seas have achieved reductions in energy use of 30% to 40% over previous ships in the Royal Carib- bean Cruises fleet. Lighting scenes are programmed to follow the diurnal rhythm of passengers so that lighting levels automatically adjust to suit time of day and global position. There is also the ability to control the system manually. Helvar has also provided more 5,700 electronic ballasts to the project. They range from the standard EL-s ballasts to the dimmable EL-sc ballasts. The Helvar ballast-

powered luminaires are installed in the crew and storage facilities areas as well as the many retail areas.
The Helvar system was installed by Audico, one of the leading audio, AV and light- ing system integrators in Finland. The 5,700 luminaires featuring Helvar electronic ballasts were manufactured by Finnish companies Sähkö-Lahti and VAKE. Allure of the Seas is the 11th cruise liner by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. to feature a Helvar lighting control system.
3D THEATRE
Barco and FUNA International partnered to develop projection, LED, lighting and controller solutions for several entertainment venues on Allure of the Seas Configuring 3D cinema on a cruise ship has its own special challenges due to the maritime environment, limited footprint, close proximity to other systems and func- tions, and the need to rely on in-house maintenance. “We called upon FUNA and their team to come up with creative technical design solutions in a number of areas including physical placement, additional cooling and power and integration with the existing audio system, and the result is a 3D movie experience as good as or better than any land-based theater,” said Christopher Vlassopulos. “On testing the finished product, people at the highest level at Barco, DreamWorks and Dolby were blown away with the result. We wanted to do a good job, but to impress them out of the gate was a real bonus and obviously something the guest will really enjoy. It looks and sounds great.”
Rex Stull, President of FUNA, added: “Oasis of the Seas is already a floating marvel, but Royal Caribbean never stands still. With 3D cinema now on board Allure of the Seas they’ve raised the bar yet again in redefining the luxury cruise guest experi- ence, and we’re proud to have been a part of it.”
“Royal Caribbean is always looking for the latest and greatest in entertainment technology, and pushing us to help develop it on board their ships and utilise it in the best way for their guests,” says Derek Warner, FUNA project manager, “which is one reason they’re fantastic to work with.” Visualisation pioneer Barco supplied integrated creative lighting and projection solutions for multiple live stage and cinematic shows presented on Allure of the
