120 VENUE
audio system, and the Sennheiser China team implemented it. Consultancy company Yin Touch Ltd is headed by Ina Schoeder. The two companies work together regularly on projects in China, and the concept venues were no different. Yin Touch Ltd have been onboard from the beginning, providing vital design and development support for all the concept venues so far. Each area of the venue has been kitted out with its own mini sound system in order to define its identity. The first class VIP area has been equipped with a total of six K-array KT20 CW speakers and a pair of single KL12 12-inch subwoofers. This section of Departure 10 has an elevated floor; meaning guests are closer to the ceiling and closer to the audio equipment. But thanks to the unique wide radial dispersion pattern of these speakers, the KT20’s are difficult to locate. All six KT20’s blend seamlessly together to create an enveloping sound field. Using the KT20’s in this way allows for both loud sound reproductions, while still allowing for visitors to talk amongst themselves and enjoy the DJ.
The system in the business and coach class operates at a much higher volume. However, it only takes an extra two KT20’s to cater for the change in dynamics. Here a total of eight KT20’s have been installed alongside two single 18-inch subwoofers. The ceiling is also higher in this section of the venue, which means the sound is diffused evenly across the space. The cockpit has the largest system encompassing the dancefloor. Ultra-slim KK50 miniature line arrays were chosen as the best solution for this space, teamed with two KT20 MA speakers and two single 18-inch subwoofers. This system ensures high sound pressure but at the same time satisfies the original design brief. In addition to the area specific sound systems, K-array Tornado KT20 CW miniature speakers have also been fitted. They are fully integrated into the airplane’s ceiling providing coverage for the whole venue. Three compact quad channel K-array KA10-10 Class D amplifiers power the entire audio system. The Departure Group operates the venue. Owner Carl Humphreys expressed his delight of the installation at Departure 10. He said: “This innovative compact audio system is the dream of architects and designers, as it provides powerful sound while maintaining the club’s unique décor integrity.”

EL CÓCTEL The idea behind El Cóctel was to use the exposed brickwork and artsy printed canvas ceiling to create a venue that oozed sophistication and promoted a feel good vibe. Owner Willy Trullas, of El Willy fame (the well known Shanghai tapas restaurant), wished to create a relaxing atmosphere in which guests can enjoy drinking and catching up with friends. He wanted to retain the original features of the building, keeping its retro heritage while introducing it to the modern world. Similar to the other concept venues, an invisible sound system was a high priority. The aim was to blend the audio seamlessly into the background of the vintage interiors. Manager Marty Campaign explained what was expected of the audio system: “For El Cóctel we required an audio solution to complement the customer experience we aim to offer. A sophisticated, quality-driven lounge. Our playback system needed to be versatile enough to provide power when needed and also deliver a warm surround sound feel at conversation-friendly volumes during our daily service hours.” Essentially El Cóctel is a wine and cocktail bar so music is generally playing in the background rather than the foreground. So the system did not necessarily need to be able to accommodate high levels of music (although it can if required), it was more important it provided a smooth and diffused sound field. Marc Vincent of Sennheiser China decided the K-array Kobra system would be the best audio package for the job. The main lounge at El Cóctel, which has a 120-capacity, is fitted out with just six K-array KK50 miniature line arrays and two K-array KL18 single 18-inch compact subwoofers. All products are virtually invisible
