CHINATOWN Chinatown was the first venue Sennheiser China and Yin Touch Ltd installed. “Marc had the idea to put together a bunch of showcases in Shanghai, where we could have a series of venues to equip with Sennheiser and K-array,” explained Ina Schroeder of Yin Touch Ltd. Similar to Departure 10, Chinatown is best described as a one- of-a-kind concept venue. “We were always looking for a special venue, not a venue you can find on every corner,” continued Ina. Chinatown’s theme is 1930s burlesque cabaret. So performances include singers, dancers, comedians and movie playbacks. The venue is also able to cater for live bands and guest singers. The design brief for Chinatown was to create excellent sound coverage without interfering with the aesthetics of the vintage theatrical space. That in itself was a challenge. However, something, which was equally challenging was designing a system that would be capable of even coverage over three floors. Under normal circumstances, a space like this would need multiple large speakers, delay lines and amplifier channels to fulfil the brief. This would lead to a lot of audio equipment being highly visible, and this was just not an option in Chinatown. To complicate things further, when using speakers in this way, on multiple levels, it brings into play phase coherence. Using a high volume of speakers in the same acoustic space means there is a risk of interference, which would lead to uneven sound. Marc Vincent of Sennheiser China decided the only way to overcome all of these obstacles was to use as few speakers as possible to cover the largest possible volume. He combined revolutionary miniature line array speaker technology from K-array, and Sennheiser wired and wireless microphones to achieve the desired effect. Marc said: “We were able to deliver to


each listener an identical sound experience, no matter where they were sitting.” The equipment Marc specified for Chinatown included two speaker arrays, one either side of the stage. The arrays comprised two KK200 units, combined vertically. The four metre high arrays contain 32 miniature 5cm speakers and were sufficient enough to cater for the sound needs for both the first and second floor. A further five K-array Tornado KT22 point source radial speakers are strategically placed throughout the rest of the venue to ensure the sound coverage remains even in every part of the venue. A pair of K-array 18-inch subwoofers hidden under the stage provide the low frequencies. And the system receives power via two K-array KA15 high power amplifiers. This spacious venue posed many challenges along the way, but thanks to the expertise of the design team this space is now equipped for all of its cabaret performers without compromising any of its 1930s charm.
