OVERVIEW Last year there were 248,000 machines in the UK which has reduced now to around 225,000 (most recent figure). Of the 248,000 recorded this included 121,000 are Category C, 71,000 Category D, 27,500 B2, 11,800 B3, 15,000 B4 and 2,500 B1. Last year Category C (AWP) machines saw stakes and prizes rise to £1 and £70 whilst Category D (crane machines) saw stakes rise to £1 and prize values up to £50 whilst pushers also saw an increase in its prize values. But the UK market has seen a dramatic decline in the arcade business over the last three years since the 2007 gambling act which restricted the stakes, jackpots and number of machines. Revenues have dropped by 20 per cent and more than 200 arcades have closed as players move over to higher stake gambling machines. The UK gambling market is worth around £84bn per year. Gambling machines in betting shops saw gross profits of £1,138m in 2008 whilst machines in AGCs saw a gross profit of £397.4m The casino industry is dominated by three main operators – Gala with 27 casinos, Grosvenor Casinos with 32 and Genting Casinos with 45 casinos. Casinos saw a total of 16.6m visitors last year whilst the gross profit from gaming machines in casinos amounted to £120.5m. The number of remote gambling operators licensed by the Gambling Commission is around 328.
