In March 2009 the Czech Finance Ministry gave permission to regulate online wagering in the country to the five largest bookmaking companies. Tipsport which has 1,020 shops and Fortuna which has around 650 shops say online betting now accounts for around 25 per cent of its business causing a drop of 5 per cent in its betting outlets. One of the main problems is the high licensing fees and taxes Czech online sites suffer from compared to foreign gambling sites which operate without such constraints

OVERVIEW With around 57,000 AWPs the Czech Republic has roughly one machine per 200 Czechs which is the highest number per capita in the EU. There are around 200 casinos operated by 29 companies and an estimated 5,000 gaming halls (hernas) dotted throughout the country with 60 plus in Prague alone. The Czechs gambled a huge CzK90bn last year (US$4.6bn) via its lottery and gambling activities and the country’s gaming industry has just multiplied over the last few years.

It is estimated that video AWPs still have about 50 per cent of the market share compared to reel AWPs, although they are becoming less interesting for players and are now being replaced by VLT terminals, which not only offer more to the players but can also be controlled by the authorities. Last year the VLT sector saw total bets of €176m which is a 646 per cent increase from the amount six years previously (or on average 100 per cent increase annually). By comparison the AWPs which are still the most popular machines saw stakes rise from €420m in 2005 to €509m in 2007 – an increase of 3.5 per cent per year.
