OVERVIEW The total amount spent in the gambling sector (including lotteries) in Spain in 2008 was almost €31bn which included €2.5bn on casinos, €3.6bn on bingo and €12.6bn on AWPs. AWPs account for almost 45 per cent of the gambling sector in Spain compared to seven per cent for casinos. The majority of AWPs now operate with a maximum 60c stake and prize of up to 500 times the stake and can also accept video technology. There are reports of up to 35 per cent drops in income in the AWP market whilst operators have no finance facilities available and suppliers are now offering payment plans and re-evaluating their prices. One thing which keeps the market stumbling along is the need to change AWPs for the newer style video or hybrid products now available in various regions. The 44 casinos in the country saw a total of 3.8m visitors in 2008. The number of bingo halls has been steadily dropping over the years with around 419 at present.
Sports betting was permitted in Spain two years ago although at the moment is only operated in the Basque Country and Madrid. The initial euphoria seems to be waning and now the online gaming sector is the current hot topic. The Spanish spent more than €85.7m on online gambling services during the third quarter of last year – the third highest interest activity after tourism related operations and direct marketing sites. It is thought that online gaming could well be introduced regionally in a similar way to the rest of its gaming laws.
