Sensei Kirk Karate Instructor
ensei Kirk, ORC’s resident karate instructor holds the rank of Yon-dan or 4th degree Black Belt. Sensei Kirk has been involved in Karate for over 30 years and has been instructing Karate for over 25 years. Sensei Kirk started the ORC Karate Academy in 1998 with 8 students. Since then there has been over 500 students come through the ORC Karate Academy. Sensei Kirk has also instructed personal safety workshops to over 12,000 preteens and teenagers within the GTA. Sensei Kirk is also the author of For Teens Only and co-author of The Busy Fool Meets Father Time and ICE - Internal Consultant Expertise. Sensei Kirk holds a business degree from McMaster University and a business diploma from Sheridan College. Sensei Kirk is married with two children. Programs
A Karate program is a well rounded activity creating a balance for any child, teen or adult, because it combines the mind, body and spirit. The karate student is taught Kata’s, which is a form of movements using both hands and feet. The karate student is also taught stances, kicks, combinations and self-defense. Our style of karate, known as Chito-ryu, meaning “1000 ways” comes from Okinawan Karate which emphasized kata over other forms of training. Our style was brought to Canada in 1959 by Masami Tsuruoka 10th Dan and became the first style to be taught in Canada. Kata is known as the dictionary of Karate since kata contains all of the essential aspects of kara- te. Both hands and feet are employed offensively and defensively. The various styles are referred to as either “soſt” or “hard” depending upon their empha- sis. The word “Kara” meaning “empty” and the word “Te” meaning “hands” created the word “Karate” meaning “empty hands”. At the ORC Karate Academy the stu- dent can do an aſter school program for an entire school year earning them their yellow belt or higher. We even have our own Karate Kata Tournament!
