Stretching and Pain
There should never be pain when you are stretching! If there is you are either injured and should not be stretching or you are overstretching. Make sure your body position is correct for the muscle group you are targeting and you just want to feel a gentle amount of tension in the targeted muscle. Go to a point that you feel a stretch but not pain. If you are stretching too much, the muscle will contract (called the stretch reflex) and do the op- posite of what you are trying to accomplish. This includes bounc- ing when you are stretching, when you bounce you can take the stretch too far and the “stretch re- flex will activate” or worse you go beyond this defense mechanism and injure yourself.
It is important to consider our unique abilities and limits. Each person’s flexibility, injuries and strengths are so different that there are no hard and fast rules about which stretches are uni- versally best. Consult your trainer or physical therapist about which stretches are best for you. Include these in your routine today and your body will thank you tomor- row.
