Tuition and exam fee support If you have difficulty paying your tuition and exam fees you should discuss this with a Student Adviser at enrolment. You will need to take along proof of income. It may then be possible to get financial support.

Adult Learning Grant If you are studying full time on your first full level 2 or first full level 3 course, you may be able to receive up to £30 per week. The amount you receive will depend on your income and partner’s income (if applicable). If you are receiving certain benefits (including JSA), you will not be able to claim this. You may claim ALG if you receive housing benefit but once you have claimed a certain amount your benefit will be affected.

Learner Support Fund and bursaries If you are having difficulty paying for your tuition fees, childcare costs, your fares to College, or have other financial problems which affect your chances of completing your course, you may be able to get help from one of the following sources:

The Learner Support Fund is provided by the Government. Applications are due in October. Allocations will be made on a formula basis based on travel, course and childcare costs.

We also have access a number of bursaries which could help if you are not eligible for Learner Support Funds.

For help and support with childcare costs you should contact the childcare staff in the College nursery on 020 7613 9181.

Funds are very limited so apply early.

If you think you will have trouble paying your fees, don’t worry – we may be able to help.

Adult Learning Grant Case Study HCC student Gloria Robinson, aged 50, studies Professional Cookery at the College’s London City Hospitality Centre and also works part-time. She’s always had a passion for cooking and has a lot of experience working in the catering industry.

However, she realised that a lot of catering jobs require employees to have recognised qualifications. She had not had any formal education since leaving secondary school and so she decided to return to education to achieve them.

She considers the Adult Learning Grant to be a “life-saver” and credits the scheme for helping

her stay on course with her education. She admits that it is difficult for a lot of older people to find that motivation to get back into learning, however she believes that the ALG is a great incentive to encourage mature students, like herself, to fulfil their dreams.

She said: “It has helped me so much. I have used the grant to get the equipment I need for my course, books, stationery and it also helps with travel to College. Without the ALG it would be a real struggle. I probably wouldn’t have been able to stay on my course and get the qualifications I need to increase my job prospects.”

All courses, dates and fees are subject to change. Courses may be cancelled without prior notice as a result of funding changes or low demand. If you are in receipt of a means tested benefit there is no tuition fee on some courses, but you will need to pay a College resource fee and your exam fee. We have tried to make the information in this guide accurate but some details were still being confirmed at time of print so some of the information will change. To avoid disappointment, please confirm course availability and costs before enrolling at www.hackney.ac.uk or 020 7613 9123.
