successful, and of these only about 10 % are from outside the UK. While academic strength is a pre- requisite, it does not guarantee acceptance; Colleges are looking for motivated students who they feel are well matched for the courses they have chosen. The University has certain minimum entrance requirements, or ‘matriculation’ requirements, which all undergraduate applicants must satisfy as evidence of their general educational background. As a general guide, applicants should be in the top 1-2 % of their year group and should have a very strong profile in the area that they wish to study at university.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE requirements
If a student’s first language is not English, it is essential that their English language skills are good enough for them to undertake an intensive and challenging academic course that is taught and examined in English. As a result, they will be asked to demonstrate their English language skills through a formal qualification such as IELTS score of 7.0, GCSE in English grade C, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English or UCLES Certificate in Proficiency in English.
APPLICATION deadline
All undergraduate applications should be made through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) and submitted by 15 October in the year before the student wishes to commence studying at the University of Cambridge.

Living Expenses
Living expenses for international students may be higher than for a home stu- dent, for instance if they have to stay in Cambridge or the UK during the vaca- tions. The minimum resources needed (excluding University and College fees) are estimated to be between £6,000 and £8,000. It is not possible for students to work during their course to pay their way through the University: they will have to prove that they can finance themselves for the entire course and Colleges will ask for financial guarantees.
Financial Support and Scholarships
Student loans for tuition fees are available to all students. Other financial support available for overseas students is limited. Few full scholarships are available at undergraduate level; most support is a partial contribution to overall costs and is means-tested.
•Cambridge Commonwealth and Overseas Trusts. The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust offer awards (mostly part cost) to over- seas students who have been accepted for admission by a Cambridge College.
