Rebecca Kirk, events assistant at Holstein UK, reports from the

European Young Breeders School (EYBS) held in Battice, Belgium where the Holstein UK team looked to learn new techniques and meet fellow international Holstein enthusiasts

olstein UK shortlisted a team from coordinator- nominated young breeders who have shown consistent enthusiasm and commitment to Holstein Young Breeders. The 2014 team included Michael Kinvig from the Isle of Man, Steven Harris from Cornwall, Becky Robertson from West Midlands, John Mclean from Northern Ireland, Lizzie Miles from the North East, Matthew Williamson from Border and Lakeland, and Marcus Doig from Norfolk.

While most of the team travelled by air, Becky Robertson assisted in the challenging car journey across the Channel with a car filled to the brim with clipping gear and the stand display. On arrival at the school in the evening, the team were taken to a farmhouse where they were pleased to spend the duration of the trip. The evening gave the team chance to bond over a few games of cards and a few bottles of local lager kindly provided by the hosting family.

The trip kick started with chocolate croissants and an official welcome by the organisers of EYBS. The team were then introduced to their English-speaking leaders, which consisted of Mike Halliwell (UK), Jaume Serrabassa (Spain), and Marie-Philip Brisson (Canada). The team were keen to meet their calves and so headed down to the marquee, which was going to be their base for the next few days. prepared, the team motored on with clipping their own calves.

Competition day on Saturday soon came round with a somewhat exciting atmosphere. The team went against 130 young breeders spread across 22 teams from 13 different countries. With the UK stand complete, the calves clean, clipped and well fed, the team began the showmanship classes. It was at this stage that the team flourished with Becky placed second, Lizzie fourth, Matthew fifth and Michael sixth.

Keen to celebrate their success, the team freshened up and headed for the ‘Gastronomic evening’ held in the lines. Each team were asked to bring food traditional to their country for fellow international
