Obituary: Len and Christobel Smith On the 25th
and 16th
September at St Bartholomew’s Church in Crewkerne, Somerset, Len Smith and his loving wife Christobel left this world as they would have wanted, together and on a beautiful autumn day. They had passed away within three days of each other on the 13th
September.
Len certainly was a larger than life character and like many other showmen of that era, he worked and competed hard and played even harder when the days showing ended (or even started for that matter!) Many will remember being woken up by the blast from his hunting horn at a show, let alone from the noise that followed from a pack of hounds. Len’s interest in cows started just before the war when he used to hand milk on the farm next door before and after school.
Len married Christobel in 1948 and they moved to near the Severn Estuary to milk a pedigree herd at Longney. He very quickly saw the chance of furthering his pedigree career when Mr Milton-Morgan was advertising for a manager for his Turmog herd.
Three years later Len moved to St Albans where he had great success with the noted sire Terling White Chief and after a short time, Len was offered a job by Major Craig Wheaton-Smith as manager of his Rurik herd, which included the entire purchase of the Elmwood herd. So in 1957 he moved to Somerset where he quickly created a herd of National repute, winning at many shows.
On the dispersal of the Rurik Herd in 1961, Len took his family up the valley to George Newman’s Eastknowle herd. He soon brought the herd into the bright lights, particularly at the Scottish and London Dairy Shows, where in one year he won all three classes of milking cows, heifer in-milk, junior and senior cow, a feat believed to have never been achieved again. The Eastknowle herd was dispersed in 1969 after which Len moved to manage Mr Stafford-Smith’s Pottrell herd, initially in Hertfordshire and then to Dartmouth in Devon where again he soon created one of the top pedigree herds in the country. The renowned cow Shopland Edleet Ruth 6th
was purchased and stood supreme champion at the Royal Show in 1975 and supreme champion at The World Conference Show in 1976.
Len then moved to his final position in his dairy farming career with Lindsey Masters’ Wilverely herd, situated in the New Forest where he developed another good herd. Upon the dispersal of this herd Len and Christobel retired to their beloved West Country to be near to family and be close enough to visit his son Dennis and his prize winning Oakroyal herd. Len was a man ably assisted by his dear wife Chris, both of them fondly remembered by one and all.
