CLUBS ONLINE WESTERN

It was good to see so many members and friends joining us for lunch and afternoon tea at the busy Cheshire and Nantwich Shows where, unusually, the sun shone on both occasions. Many thanks to Joseph Helers for providing a variety of delicious cheeses for our stands.

Members of all ages joined us for a trip to the Jaguar Land Rover factory at Halewood, Liverpool, providing a welcome and interesting break. We were all quite taken aback at the scale of the operation, the involvement of robots within the process and the numbers of vehicles that can be produced in one day – up to 900 off the production line – and still with a waiting list of up to six months. In August our Young Breeders attended the weekend rally, an event enjoyed by all. This was followed by the combined Calf Show in September at which they put in an excellent performance. This was a winning day for the Nutsford’s Riverdane herd who had champion calf with Riverdane SVS Atlee, reserve champion calf with Riverdane Explode Springsteen and honourable mention with Riverdane Doorman Spotless – with Western’s champion handler award taken by Jodie Nutsford. Our thanks go to everyone who is involved with the Young Breeders in any way, particularly Will and Louise Glenn of Distinctive Holsteins who are investing a lot of time in helping HYB prepare for these events. In September fourteen Club member herds took part in our annual Herds Competition, judged by Eddie Brigham from Norfolk. We would like to thank John Porter, David Rutter and Ivan Shepherd for stewarding and those who hosted Eddie during the three-day event. This was topped off by an Awards Dinner at the Lord Binning in Kelsall to present trophies and celebrate with the winners on their achievements. Particular mention must go to L F Horton and Sons who took the champion herd and to I and P Scarisbrick as they scooped four of the 15 trophies.

YORKSHIRE Yorkshire HYB sent two teams to Devon for the weekend rally. They all thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, which was well organised with superb herds to visit. We held our calf show jointly with the North East. The results are as follows:
