NEW PRODUCTS AID HERD MANAGEMENT
Recent new product launches have enabled Holstein UK and CIS members to get even more out of their membership. Janet Spicer of the Saxelby herd was one of the fi rst to see some of those benefi ts
How long have you been a Holstein member and CIS customer? We have been pedigree since 1983 and combined our milk recording by joining the Complete Service in 2006.
You use the Complete Service - what are the benefi ts to you and your business?
The Complete Service completely removes the hassle out of our record keeping and with single data entry we have multiple use. The links to BCMS in particular offer real time savings at no extra cost. We also fi nd that the available combined reports aid us to meet the needs of legislative inspections that demand accurate information.
Did you attend the UK Dairy Day event and what did you think?
Sadly I had to stay at home to do the work! But, my father Andrew visited and returned home full of praise. He thought it was a
fantastic event and a brilliant advert for British dairy farming.
Have you used the new set of breeding management reports launched at UK Dairy Day by the Holstein UK Group (KPIs, inbreeding co-effi cient, family report)?
I have and found them really useful. The KPI document
showed me all my classifi cation and milk recording results and compared my herd against the national average. It highlighted areas where the herd is exceeding and the areas I should be focusing on to develop the herd further.
The combined sets of data were invaluable as that provided me with a complete picture. While there are certain cows that catch my attention in the milking parlour for various reasons, it is interesting to see that once you group all the cows together, some do in fact slip under the radar and are only highlighted once you analyse the family report. Breeding the future herd is key to ensure sustainable profi t, so the information from the new inbreeding co-effi cient report signifi cantly aids our decisions on breeding choices. These tools are very much welcomed at Saxelby, as the modern day dairy farmer needs every bit of help we can get to manage our herd in a profi table manner, particularly in the current milk price climate.
The KPI documents (shown left) are available to all Holstein members and CIS Customers and will now be brought onto farm as a matter of course at each classifi cation. They are also available on both websites. Your classifi er or our membership services team will gladly guide you through the information and provide you with expert advice.
