Sired by the Shottle son Carhall Sensation she is out of a VG85 scored Jeeves daughter, one of six VG or EX classified dams going back to the Deslacs herd in Quebec, Canada. Joint top price was Brian and Craig Davidson’s Errolston Deann Lilian. This England-Schill Deann daughter is out of a VG86 classified dam by Merchant who is backed by three generations of EX scored cows. At 1900gns was another from the Davidson’s Errolston herd, this time Errolston Loader Sarah. She is by Cogent Loader and out of the VG87 classified Errolston Outside Sarah who gave 11,716kg at 4.34%bf and 3.25%p in her fifth lactation. Both these heifers were also acquired by Mr McCamley. Stowbeck Durham Mavis Red from the Wilson family at Skirwith Hall Farms traded at 1900gns. By Durham Red she is out of Stowbeck Merlin Mavis Red, an Arethusa SS Merlin daughter. She was knocked down to Messrs Schug, Appleby. An End-Story sired heifer also from the Wilson’s traded at 1900gns to Fauld Farm, Longtown. Stowbeck Endstory Mavis 2 is out of a Talent daughter that gave 13,251kg at 3.65%bf and 3.27%p in her third lactation. The pre-sale champion was Cunswick Lionheart Belle from J W Graves. This Denmire Bridge End Lionheart daughter is out of a Final Cut daughter and then backed by two generations of Very Good scored dams. She now joins Duncan Horsley’s Woodcatt herd at 1850gns. Averages: One cow in milk £1806, 10 heifers in milk £1890 (Harrison and Hetherington).


Borderway Youngstock Sale A special sale of young Holstein heifers took place at Borderway, Carlisle, in September and were consigned by pedigree herds from Yorkshire, Northumberland and Dumfries and comprised a number of in-calf heifers due from November to January, as well as some recently served heifers, bulling heifers and young calves.


The prize winning Miresdale herd sold a number of outstanding heifers to peak at £2100 for Miresdale Spot Red sired by Miresdale Mateo. This classy red heifer is due in January to the Die- Hard son Miresdale Roman and out of a highly productive line of cows with her grand dam peaking at almost 17,000kgs. She was purchased by Mr Hares, Whitchurch. Bulling heifers made up to £1620 for a Miresdale Belltone daughter from a high protein family.


The Batey family from Morallee Farm, Hexham, dispersed their Holstein young-stock topping at £850 for a Toc-Farm Goldfish daughter. Having sold their herd at the end of 2013, the Faulkner family from Newabby, Dumfries, sold the final portion of young-stock. Their in-calf heifers due from November to January were sired by top proven sires including Shottle, End-Story and Jeeves.


They made a top of £1280 for a Million daughter. The bulling heifers from this herd saw very brisk bidding to make £900 top for an End-Story heifer. Averages: Miresdale; 17 in-calf heifers £1642.23, 10 served heifers £1283.31, 13 bulling heifers £954.61, 16 young heifers £775.02; Morelee: 21 bulling heifers £769.09, 13 heifers calves £464.61; Maxwellfield: 43 in-calf heifers £1079.13, 53 bulling heifers £787.58 (Harrison and Hetherington).


Craven Dairy Auction


Leading trade at the September Craven Dairy Auction at Skipton was a £2200 bid for the third prize winner Aireburn Toyota Christine from Brian Moorhouse. Sired by Altatoyota, she is out of the VG88 Aireburn Ferrari Christine. A fortnight fresh at the sale, she was giving 31kg a day and sold to Wilmot Blockley, Tarvin, Chester. Next best was £2100 for Robin Jennings’ Stainbank Roxy 29, a fresh calved daughter of Burlane Tennyson. Her dam is by Hyde- Park Lennox and is backed by four generations of VG dams. She was also knocked down to Mr Blockley. The pre-sale champion Newbanks Gertie 318 from the Lawson family sold at £2000 to the Sowray family, Bishop Thornton. By Shottle this second calver sold 22 days fresh and giving 38kg a day having produced 7262kg at 4%bf and 2.79%p in her first lactation. Average: pedigree heifers £1834.


Hawkbarrow herd dispersal The dispersal of Allan Lowrey’s Hawkbarrow Holstein herd from Gosforth was held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on the 1st


October.


Leading trade at 2600gns was the stylish uddered heifer, Hawkbarrow Mammoth Nettle. Sired by Emmark Mammoth she was one month fresh and sold giving over 30kg a day to J Marrs and Son, Broomhills, Carlisle. Her dam is a Garrison daughter that produced 11,647kg at 3.93%bf and 2.93%p in her fifth lactation. At 2300gns was a young second calved cow giving 35kg a day and selling to Keith Pattinson, Walby Hall, Carlisle. She is a Lutz-Brookview Burt daughter out of a VG86 cow with very high components. More than 20 animals sold for £2000 or more, a wonderful testament to the quality and breeding of the Hawkbarrow herd. The in-calf heifers also sold well peaking at 2350gns for a daughter of Regancrest Isley due in a month to Pellerat DVD. She was purchased by CW Bushby, Watson Hill, Cumbria. Averages: 61 cows in milk or in-calf £1464.49, 50 heifers in milk £1657.95, five in-calf heifers £1858.50 (Harrison and Hetherington).
