CLUBS ONLINE DERBYSHIRE

Derbyshire Holstein Club has had a successful summer with two very well attended stock judging evenings at Messrs Fletchers’ Damdale herd and the Dutton family’s Royan herd, the latter being the first joint venture with the Staffordshire Holstein Breeders Club. In June around 40 members headed to Cumbria to Kevin and Christine Wilson’s Warnelview herd and after an exceptional lunch at the Shepherd’s Inn in Carlisle, moved on to the long established Petteril Herd run by Stephen and Ann Morley. It was great to see two couples with so much involvement in developing the outstanding families within their respective herds. In July, sixteen seasoned enthusiasts embarked on a three day trip to South East England. After a long journey down to Kent seeing volumes of traffic rarely witnessed in the Derbyshire hills the group arrived at the 1250 Friesian cow enterprise of the Joules family. Four hours later, everyone was full of ideas and inspiration to take home – the confidence of Peter Joules was jaw dropping! The following days were spent visiting the Downing’s Wintersell herd, Tim and Marion Gue’s Huddlestone herd and the Curtismill herd of Robert and John Torrance in Essex. In all these herds there were deep cow families, with a string of highly classified female families that had been developed into profitable cows with the use of top fitness trait sires – proving that you can have the best of both worlds.

Willie Fleming of the Hillhead herd judged the summer herd competition and selected the best herd as the Shepherd family’s Meldamar herd on the beautiful Chatsworth Estate

In early October the Annual Dinner and presentation of awards was well attended with around 70 members and judge Willie Fleming as guest of honour.

On the 28th of August a coach full of eaglerly awaiting South Wales farmers took a day trip to visit the Woodmarsh and Wyndford herds in Shropshire. After a breakfast stop in Newbridge on Wye, they ventured on to the Woodmarsh herd of Mick Gould and family where they saw numerous famous families and tremendous cows. Most people were blown away by the sheer scale of the cows and the volume of milk they produce.

After a quick stop for lunch, the Wyndford herd was their next destination. Along with the cows, the millions of lettuce sold every year left everybody in awe.

The Club would like to thank Mick Gould and family, Ben Yates and family and Messrs Maddocks for their hospitality and warm welcome. UK Dairy Day in Telford on the 17th September saw cows from across South Wales come together to form the South Wales team. Cows from BB, Castellhyfryd, Hillbarn, Tregibby, Walliswood, Starlet and Trevithyn were all members of the team. The Club was delighted to win the Tidiest Lines competiton. We did very well as a club on the whole, but the highlight of the show was the Feithy herd winning the UK Premier Herd. Well done to the Jones family at Cilfeithy.
